I'll risk sounding like a fanboy and say that not having Boruto utilize any long-ranged techniques against the opponent with a big ass short range advantage constitutes as a plotnerf, especially after giving him three f*cking elements to work with. This time, sure, fair enough, confined space and all that, plus he didn't know it was Shikadai, I get the close range...but the one in the Chunin Exams is really jarring.

The Chunin exam was Boruto’s momentary doubt in his own abilities. Everything has always come easy for him and everyone is always praising him. Except his father and Sasuke. When he finally was challenged he didn’t know how to handle it and so reverted to using ninja tech rather than rely on his own skill.

He was very much capable of dealing with Shikadai and that other Genin during the exams, but his own weakness was his lack of determination. Kakashi pointed that out when he asked him if he could break his own arm to get free.
