Kushina is probably strong with her Kekkei Genkai, but in the rest of the shinobi arts she hasn't shown any other feats and is only listed as a Jounin, and doesn't have the same reputation as her husband, or Fugaku. Her lack of mastery in the other arts would probably explain Naruto being utter garbage at even simple things.

It's a Hidan technique, like the shadow binding technique, expansion, bug techniques in Konoha. It's not a KKG. She uses her chakra and molds it into chains. It has defensive and offensive capabilities. Also she can use in conjugation with her fuinjutsu techniques. That is she can turn the chains into barriers and different seal techniques. Hence her holding Kurama down. In terms of strength, she held Kurama down after giving birth and having a Bijuu (the strongest one of the nine) taken out of her. Had she lived she'd be the strongest Kunoichi alive. Karin was using an incomplete version of Kushina's admantine. All she did was mold her chakra into chains and use it offensively.

If it's a hidden technique, how is it that Karin knows the chain ability despite not having contact with any other clan members besides her mother who possessed a similar Kekkei Genkai to Karin.

Kushina is noted for having special chakra, more than likely a rare Kekkei Genkai in her clan, akin to Dead Bone Pulse within the Kaguya clan.

It's classed as a hidden technique in the databook not a kekkei genkai, I think all uzumaki can learn it(both of the users have Yin release in common) but kushina's was stronger because of her special chakra(strong chakra). It's likely karin learnt it from her mother and finally managed to use it at that time.

That bold. Do you have a statement or scan confirming that? And what simple things are you referring to with Naruto?

I think it's based on the fact that Kushina admits she was bad at ninjutsu. Genjutsu is advanced ninjutsu(So I highly doubt she was any better at that), she may have been okay to good at thaijutsu, We know for certain she was good at fuinn jutsu since she taught Minato them.

Her fuuin jutsu mastery made up for her ninjutsu lackage, I think.

Kushina with her fuuin jutsu could be hella powerful. The chains of karin were a fragment of kushina's stated in data book.
