That's because Kabuto took away Itachi and Nagato's free will, Itachi simple rewrote a command over Edo tensei with Koto. But for example when Orochimaru revived the five hokage he didn't suppress their ability to make their own decision. In that situation you can use all abilities you had when alive. Minato was also able to use his sealing jutsu to teleport the Juubi TBB to the ocean.

Okay,so they'd have to have free will in order to seal one another.But, is that really defeating the other person, or tricking them?

An edo fight is absolutely unnecessary, if you'd have to use sharingan/rinnegan to gain free will.

If you want an edo battle, you'd have to specify the circumstances.
