I'm going to go ahead and tell you now that I like Naruto as a whole despite how poorly it regressed throughout it's run. This is just my opinion on why some things I feel went wrong with the series.

Naruto
is a gary stu (predictable and safe). Normally this can be forgiven due to him being the MC of a shonen series. Unfortunately, his character become more about Sasuke in the sense of him being one of his goals. The hokage and other underlining themes and development were sacrificed because of this.

This alone resulted in Sasuke and the Uchiha Clan becoming a "plot tumor"

Sasuke/Uchiha: The Uchiha clan, and Sasuke in particular, have done nothing but become more prominent in the story as time passes. It's gotten to the point where the Uchiha clan is responsible for the entire plot of the manga. Sasuke started out as merely The Rival to Naruto (though he clearly had greater story importance than other such rivals due to also being Naruto's teammate) who wanted to avenge his clan, but as the Uchiha presence expanded, so has his. He's arguably had more face time in the manga than the actual protagonist (he hasn't, though he's had more than every other character despite being largely absent for the first three arcs of Part 2), and in the arcs shaping up to be the climax of the series, it's mainly Uchihas who accomplish anything of importance.

Not only that, Sasuke and Uchiha were continually used as the driving force behind the series. This made Sasuke's actions inconsistent and contrived. Their entire clan were characterized as over emotional allowing them to be manipulated and manipulative.

Hashirama Cells
The First Hokage possessed a rare ability to control wood, something done by combining water and earth elemental chakra. In the beginning, this was just one of ten possible chakra combinations, with no reason to believe it was any more special than lava chakra or ice chakra. As the series has progressed, however, the importance of the first hokage's cells, which possessed this ability, has grown to the point where the amount of characters that possess them rivals the amount that possess the sharingan.

Sakura:
She was an addition made by kishimoto's editor. She lacks a proper background and development.

Overall, She's way too human for this series, which isn't a bad thing and one of her best traits. despite that, her character become absorbed into Sasuke to the point that it stopped her potential and destroyed her.

Pairings:

Major reason why Sakura/Hinata are awful (on top of being females).

Hinata: Originally intended to be a villager. Kishimoto made her a shinobi, gave her a background story that interconnected with other characters, and something to overcome.

Then proceeded to make her the safest character in the entire series. She had no flaws outside of confidence and power, Her ideology overlapped with the 2nd safest character (Naruto) so much that she stopped him from converting after Neji's death and in hindsight was literally created specifically for him in a shallow way. Much like the contrived reasoning Sakura loves Sasuke.

(her development went from "i'm not confident but I love Naruto" to "I'm confident and I love Naruto").

Top three selling manga
It deserved it just from the power of Part 1 till the Pain Arc.

But what does that have to do with execution and writing? Naruto hit the US hard along with DBZ and One Piece. (even though 4kids almost ruined it)

If you're trying to say "Kishimoto did something right" then of course. You dont become the top 3 backed by shonen jump unless you have editors, a vision and doing something right.

It's just poorly executed.

I could probably right a 10 page paper on the flaws of Naruto's character. As for Uchihas like Itachi and Sasuke, they're just Gary-Stus to the fullest. And their mood swings and ex machinas are worse.

It always seemed kishi bit off more than he could chew, and just ended building this world and these characters just to narrow down the focus in a mad rush to the end. A lot of the problems you speak of could of been solved with more fleshing out of other things in the story

Saving sasuke and becoming hokage tie into each other, the whole yin/yang theme

Naruto and sasuke are the main characters
Side characters are only relevant for the main characters development
Zabuza and haku
K11
The sannin
All hokages
The ame orphans
Obito and kakashi
Hashi and madara
Indra and ashura
Hagoromo and whoever else i missed

One thing that stands out about naruto, from other manga, is the potential storylines that side characters have

He focuses on one storyline so much that it consumed the series. It got to the point to where he couldn't turn back and develop anyone else. It's why the fact that bykaugan having such importance in the Boruto series is so unnerving.

There were literally no hints of Hamura, Toneri, or aliens.

One piece has character development and storylines for the strawhats and even some of the enemies and allies. If we're talking about potential, then yeah.

Naruto has lots of it. Probably too much for a weekly series.

This is also one of the reasons why a laugh at people who dismiss fillers completely. Call them non-canon all you'd like, there's no denying the series' world and characters are far more fleshed out this way, not to mention the majority of Naruto's popularity, like most other mangas, comes from the anime.

I can respect that. Part 1 was still slightly average for Shonen sake, it was iconic.

I mean just look at Gaara v. Rock Lee, that shit is still bread and butter for most people. I was on rabb.it with a friend of mine who never watched Naruto, and I decided to stream some Naruto fights to see if I could get him hooked. We watched that 40 minute Youtube clip and that dude was all emotional and shit over Rock Lee's backstory and his will to not stand down. He decided to watch Naruto afterwards.

Personally despite its many flaws, Part 1 Naruto got the respect it deserves. Part 2 Naruto is garbage tho.

This is why it reeks of rushed or carelessness, in your average short manga this is excusable. But in something like naruto kishi already has 5 other villages to draw things from, or lean things towards, or even to go into backstory wise. It's not even like he would of had to make anything up on the spot, there's sh t already there to go into

Damn, I feel bad for him. Gonna be faced with disappointment down the line. I don't recommend Naruto to anyone, just straight up tell them to just watch Part 1 and let them know the series becomes garbage

i don't believe the series was poorly executed as opposed to things about it that were poorly executed. If the series as a whole was poorly executed, it wouldn't have lasted 700 chapters with a bunch of movies, a spin-off series, or a multi-continental fanbase.

In my opinion
Part 2 is a lot better and more interesting than part 1
People overrate part 1 way too much

Naruto became a shit series because it wasn't about ninjas anymore, and instead turned to DBZ crap. That's the primary reason Naruto is shit. Of course, others reasons like poor character development, plot-holes, the Uchiha etc. are all important too, but the message of Naruto was supposed to be the world ninjas; power levels were low, lots of strategy battles, Shinobi values and unique abilities are what the ninja is supposed to be, but this changed as soon as Shippuden was aired.
