So the sage gave him the handout necessary to equal Indra even Naruto once given handout gained yin release as a nature. Hashirama inherited the handout and had yin release. If you look at indra incarnates they have yin release but no yang. They don't need it really they'd be too powerful otherwise. Also a point to note is you dont need yang energy to awaken the rinnegan but potent yin (Sasuke doesn't have yang release therefore the hashirama cells theory goes out of the window).

Hagoromo didn't give Indra anything. Not in one manga-scan did he hand Indra power. Indra was just born with the Sharingan, and even then, Hagoromo didn't have the Sharingan, Kaguya did.

Hagoromo gave Asura something, he gave Asura power, which is the same power he gave Naruto and the opposite of that power he gave to Sasuke.

It bothers them that Asura tied with his brother despite being helped by his father. It hurts their pride in the Asura bloodline. If anything it speaks volumes about how powerful Indra might have been as a character.
