Based on all the characters in this series. I truly believe Nagato had the most versatile arsenal.

In fact I will also say the main reason why he was so difficult to fight was due to him having an ability or counter for everything.

Kishi did a great job hyping the Rinnegan's versatility based on his abilities.

In my eyes he made Nagato weak for Madara's plot & Itachi weak for Sasuke's plot..

Nagato has Uzumaki/Otsutsuki lineage with the body & chakra to handle the Rinne but Kishi nerf him on his second serious use of the Rinne to prove only Madara or Uchiha can handle it properly.. He made Itachi so strong that he gave him a sickness for Sasuke's plot/power up

Itachi planned his death as he wanted to die by Sasuke hands. If anything it shows Itachi's skill as he was able to play along 100% without killing sasuke

I can't fathom how powerful a healthy Itachi would have been. Even as sick as he was, he could still handle a healthy Sasuke while manipulating the fight's direction.

True. Honestly we all know Nagato won that fight with Naruto. If not for Kurama Naruto would have died there sure. But cmon now he's the hero so of course he would win. That's what plot is all about.

But yeah I agree. Negato has all his bases cover, crept genjutsu but even then he found his way around it no problem.

You failed to understand the meaning of the word versatile.. mokuton is the ultimate jutsu. Madara has Rinnegan just like Nagato. Better yet it's his rinnegan nagato uses.
