No, it happen with a reason albeit just a probability, "only his mother can defeat him". Unlike Batman and Superman where they suddenly stop fighting bcus of Martha and they befriend afterward.
Also it happen not bcus August saw Gildart and Chana but his Mother, Mavis. Some unknown power from Mavis just kill him or more like a Self Destruct device with specific triggering mechanism.
Mavis was the automatic trigger button of August. I failed to see the resemblance with Martha
Dude the only thing worse than this chapter is this comment I just read. You're so black and white and unable to draw parallels that I'm not sure if you're trolling me or just not very smart.
Even though this chapter was not very good, I would suggest rereading it with my previous comment in the back of your head. Look at page 12 where Gildarts is holding Cana close. August takes note in the next panel and sees the bond between a parent and his child. This is the part where the light bulb should pop up above your head and notice the theme of this fight. And August his rant about his parents and his flashback.
And alas, enter 'Martha', Hiro even writes: "His majesty's child, the only one who could defeat him would probably be his own mother". And there she is within eyesight of him. A stupidly convenient family bond plotshield to save Fairy Tail.
There was no self destruct device or trigger mechanism. He killed himself because he saw the love between a father and his daughter, which was his deepest wish. Knowing that he could never obtain that he ended himself. Sparing Gildarts and Cana, and having his dream live on through them.
I really suggest you try to read more into the chapters, because there is a lot of backstory that you're missing.
