Now, this is not the typical Vs. thread that you'd see in the Colosseum, so hear me out before posting.
This is a thread dedicated to establish which ninja is superior, not in a 1v1 rather, holistically. I'll set the stage just so you can see what is expected:
8G Gai is evidently superior in power, but SM Hashirama's AoE and Defensive capabilities enables him to excel in areas where 8G Gai cannot. 8G Gai did compete with a Juubi Jin, but his short-lived power would go in vain when presented with specific situations where Hashirama's utility would've been far more instrumental than 8G Gai's glorified power. For instance:
Gai was immediately hesitant upon using the 8th Gate's due to the risk it poses to the user and even if it were capable of deterring those Bijuudama, he would not have been capable of fending off flurries of Bijuudama continuously nor would he have been capable of freeing the Bijuu from Obito's control. In a scenario such as this, 8G Gai's power would've been fruitless as he would've simply delayed the inevitable and would've died for nothing. Hashirama's capabilities enables him to defend against those Bijuudama with relative ease, effortlessly ensnare the Bijuu, free them from Obito's control, and ultimately save the entire team; something Gai cannot do.
Hashirama's Mokuton has more value because serves as the most expedient method to capturing and restraining targets with ease; perfect for gathering information,
This is just a prime example of what I'm talking about. Not just 1v1, but in general. 8G Gai might have more power, but guys such as Minato, Naruto, and Hashirama were more instrumental than Gai would've ever been against the Juubi due to their utility and ability to protect an entire team.

, or restraining and Edo Tensei to seal them away. Hashirama's defensive capabilities also would've enabled him to alter the trajectory of a Juubidama, thus, saving an entire Shinobi Alliance from a Juubidama with a mere clone and could've accomplished more had the original not been occupied with Madara.
