Do you guys think normal rasenshuriken like when Naruto fought Pain, could pierce through Gaara's sand defence ?

No it can't.

Rasenshuriken is an explosive attack. A explosion of wind needles. But still an explosive attack.
C3 is an explosive attack. It's more powerful than Rasenshuriken.
A thinned out Sand Shield over Suna negated C3.
A condensed Sand Shield should negate it with little difficulty.

Gaaras automatic defense get obliterated. But one would be foolish to think Gaara couldn't produce strong enough Sand to tank a regular FRS.

Gaara's Gourd Sand would be destroyed while his Desert Sand could withstand it depending on the volume of sand as well as the minerals used to form the sand.

Gaara's sand could barely defend against a rasengan when he's distracted. Gaara's sand defensive sphere got burst by a close-range rasengan. If Naruto lowers his guard like he did with Kakazu, a rasen-shuriken is certainly atomising him.
