Nah, the former takes a lot more control.

The sixth paths technique is made to compensate for Nagato's physical limitations. He's just controlling corpses using chakra receivers. Nothing is fighting him back for control. The outer path allows nagato to assume more influence as he can speak through the paths, they are essentially a substitute for him.

Edo tensei are undead corpses with souls. The kunai is there to regular how much control he has over the target. Some require complete control and some don't.

Both are effective means of "control", control being a broad term.

Yeah, it was. Before that point, Pain's Shinkra Tensei reaction was so fast not a single person who knew better had even attempted to even get close to him during his five second interval. Itachi just managed it randomly. Probably out of Kishimoto's bias for him.
