JK canons it. I don't like it either, kind of breaks the visual continuity for me, but whatever. I'll probably just be reading a synopsis of the story just to keep up with the universe. Also there's a book of the story. Don't know if it's out or not though.

Step back and ask yourself:

1. Historically, do white people have anything to lose from less representation in Western media

2. Historically, do black people have anything to gain from more representation in Western media.

Then you'll see why this isn't a problem.

1. No, because European culture has become the norm of society, look at your average anime, the characters despite being the creation of Asian authors have European features, Naruto clearly looks like a white kid with blue eyes and yellow hair, something tells me, Hitler would love Naruto, haha. but you get the point.

2. Yes, besides the obvious lack of African culture aside from the West, all Black people had to show forth in this Memorial Day/Week, was ROOTS, a 4 part(I believe?) series about blacks being called N*ggers and getting whipped into being obedient slaves, I agree with Snoop Dogg in his rant against Roots, Black people have accomplished so much in Music, Sports.etc instead of showing the accomplishments of black people, they instead showed Black people being in Slavery, so Black folks do have to gain something from this, especially in a series so loved by all like Harry Potter.

publicity stunts these days are so negatively fueled, really says a lot about our current society. even Harry Potter is trying to build hype and discussion by doing it now. its sad really

My personal opinion on the matter? I don't care. They can cast a black actress. We already have the movie series with a white actress and that's good enough for me.

But to be fair, there are two sides to this.

1. JK Rowling likes the idea of a black hermione and stated that she never visualized the character as any particular race.

2. It was pretty clearly stated in the books that she was white, even if JK Rowling says it wasn't.

Here are some passages:
"“Harry, come on, move!” Hermione had seized the collar of his jacket and was tugging him backward. “What’s the matter?” Harry said, startled to see her face so white and terrified." (Goblet of Fire, Chapter 9); "Nobody spoke for a while, not even when they heard the distant crash that meant Grawp had pulled over the pine tree at last. Hermione’s face was pale and set." (Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 30); "“But — but where? How?” said Hermione, whose face was white." (Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 32); "“He’s fainted,” said Hermione, who was also rather pale; she no longer looked like Mafalda, though her hair was still gray in places." (Deathly Hallows, Chapter 14); "Hermione was wrapped in a borrowed dressing gown, pale and unsteady

exactly. its just to stir up controversy and create hype for the release

And there you go.

These double standards really make me sick. Everyone complains about the Major in Ghost in the Shell being whitewashed, but anyone who has a problem with Hermione suddenly being black is racist. And yes, it is sudden. Don't let anyone who says the books never mention her race fool you, Rowling absolutely envisioned a white girl when she wrote those stories.

Sorry that's just stupid. Won't be able to take that movie seriously.

I would have a problem with it the other way around, so don't get your panties in a bunch whoever decides to quote me on it.

Except it's not the same thing. White people have historically been exponentially more represented more than minorities in the majority of Western art and media. The problem with whitewashing is that you're taking the little representation available to minorities and giving it to Caucasians, who are already highly represented.

The reason it's not a problem when a white character is made black is because whites have little to nothing to lose from doing so, while blacks gain representation because of how little they have, especially when relative to whites.

The difference between making a minority character white and making a white character a minority is the difference between taking a thousand dollars from a poor person to give to a millionaire and taking a thousand dollars from a millionaire to give to a poor person.

Sigh, I always heavily disliked changing race/***/age of already established characters. Want a black girl to take the lead? Great, make a new character. No need to turn a white character black just for the sake of a publicity stunt.

She was implied to be white, and according to her Rowling's own sketch, she is white.

I don't think they should've had a black Hermonie, it ruins the feel of the 7 movies.
Ron looks completely different aswell.

How does a completely separate play ruin the feel of the movies? You can just go back and watch the movies and get that feel again.

Well, Emma Watson will always be associated with "Hermione Granger" in my head. But I don't have a problem with the new actress at all. Sure, it's different and lots of people have to grow accustomed to the new visualization, but that's it.
J.K. Rowling said Noma Dumezweni is the best choice for the role, then so be it. I support it.

DUMEZWENI????????

WTF??? What's with these south africans taking over! "dumezweni" = "xhosa"/"nguni" "king T'chaka" in avangers = "xhosa"

OTT: Unbelieveable!! I am used to someone being that way! Why change it XD

Why black james bond??? because in my brain I have created a white nuttcracker from England as 007...

If a character is someone never change it XDXD I would struggle to envision a white Nick Fury in MCU now that Sam jackson took over.

So ironic, since Nick Fury is originally white.

I personally don't really like this idea, as I have always visualized a character as being white (due to massively popular film portrayals by Emma Watson) and it simply jars a bit to see Hermione recharacterized as black all of a sudden in a sequel.
Imo, you can't accuse people of racism simply because they don't like the recharacterization.

Rowling said in an interview she didn't mind the black hermoine theory. She obviously forgot she wrote in the books Hermoine had a white face. Change any character to white and you're a racist change any character from white and how dare you question that. People

Yes, because one of those is historically progressive and the other is historically oppressive.

That's true. I should view this like I view Boruto, just not give a shit about anything.

Yes, because one of those is historically progressive and the other is historically oppressive.

The fact that you refuse to see the hypocrisy of celebrating racial change in one aspect and demonizing it on the other is the worrisome part. I heard the same argument with Danny Rand, how is it oppressive to make a white guy do martial arts? How is it progressive to steal a character for your own? Also what kind of world are you trying to live in where you judge present day people's intent based on the intentions of people with similar skin they have no actual connection to and may or may not even be related to them from the past? You sound like your back in the day; white people wear "black clothing styles" "You can't wear what we do, appropriation" you sound like the old racists who didn't want the "lessers"thinking they were similar and dressing the same.
