A while back, I concluded that the Zetsu that Madara created by combining Hashirama's DNA and the Gedo Mazo were actually the souls of the original IT victims. This combination of the 2 resulted in a miniature god tree and the idea was that the Hashirama DNA wasn't actually creating clones of Hashirama, but rather the Senju chakra itself was simply fueling the Gedo Mazou that had been devoid of chakra. This fuel allowed the Mazou to form new bodies for the souls it had held hostage this whole time. This seems to be the conclusion the anime team decided upon as well, and hence why it was in this episode.
However, the episode also created a pretty substantial hole in the theory as well. After defeating and Sealing Kaguya, all her victims were released, seemingly unharmed and none of them had been turned into zetsu. Yet, the manga strongly implies that Kaguya not only succeeded in turning the victims into zetsu, but nearly wiped out the whole planet with it. In this episode, we don't even see Kaguya cast the original IT.
So how does the mazou having leftover IT victims make sense if it was never cast and they were never sacrificed? The ritual of bringing victims to the tree seemed like a simple warm up for the main event, but that main event never occurred. The manga seemed to imply that Kaguya was victories for a time and created an army, but not before letting some of victims go in order to not completely wipe out the human race. It seemed that after some time, the brothers were successful in defeating her, but again that only seemed to happen after IT had been cast and succeeded.
It could just be that the anime got it wrong and didn't show the casting of the IT itself, but its certainly a conundrum in my mind. If anyone has some thoughts on the matter that might clarify things for me, please share. Thank you for reading.
