Never saw the anime so i think it's ok for me to watch this. As nothing to be expected XD

The general premous of the anime revolves around the idea that life as we commonly know it is not the only kind of life put there. It questions the plausibility of whether machines can be considered living organisms or not. It gets into the philosophy of what life even is.

It's really an anime for the Intellectual. It's definitely not the run of the mill anime that don't do anything unique. Very abouve average series.

How can you whitewash a white woman?

Seriously, people who think whitewashing should be an issue in cinema should just leave.[/QUOTE]

Depends on what character is changed to white.

She's Japanese out of name alone. In the anime, she has white skin and blue eyes.

If in other movies based on other media Hollywood decided to turn a previously different race and cast with another race, that would be something different. However, you have two white women playing the same role. One is an American white woman, the other is a Japanese white woman. What's the issue here?

I love you. Fans are acting as if it changes anything at all when in reality it doesn't.

Was there anything distinctly "Japanese" about Motoko?

Oh, you mean where they Japanese Washed a Caucasian White woman to be Asian? Because the original animated movie depicted Makoto with white skin and Blue eyes. I don't think Japanese media should be able to Asian wash my Caucasian women.

If nothing else, this should show you how ridiculous Race-washing sounds. It's a goddamn movie.

You are the most defensive person in this thread XD

Anyway, she has blue f***ing hair

idgaf

But if you think Hollywood wasn't thinking about race when they casted Scarlett Johansson, and that there weren't Asian women auditioning, then you're naive af XD

They were probably thinking of how a big actress like Scarlett who can look like the character and act great would get them money.

So what does ethnicity have to do with anything? Mokoto can look white, or slightly like a Japanese person so who cares?

Nagi. The greatness you are talking about depicted the first Makoto as:

Look how Caucasian she is! So YOUR depiction of who Makoto is is touching MY depiction, because MINE was first.

Back to Tumblr with you.

It's depends on which character is being changed to white. If we have a character whose entire nationality is being changed then I don't like it.

If we have a character whose race is an important part of their character I don't like it. I like things to be as close the the source material as possible. That's it.

Does Nationality really matter? Honestly, I don't believe anywhere in Ghost in Shell does the setting present Makoto in a real-life Japanese world. Fictional, yes, but that just opens up another can of worms.

You better go watch that first movie again and compare her to the "puppeteer" who was Caucasian and american af!

Yeah. Usually in Hollywood white actors get most roles. Other races aren't as likely. Black actors almost exclusively get roles in movies target to black people or roles that specifically require a black actor.

You better get used to the idea of a Caucasian Ghost, because they are undergoing a faithful adaptation to the origin story.

Bruh, Takeshi Kitano (the legend) is the only confirmed Japanese member of the main cast

In a series that takes place in Japan with most Japanese-named characters

Like I said, idgaf, because this is Hollywood, and I know how it goes, but don't come in here acting like it's all passive and totally not racially-motivated decisions

And in fact, I'm sure that to most people it doesn't matter, including the Japanese audience, with whom this movie will undoubtedly be hyper-popular

I'm just saying that they knew what they were doing, and it wasn't a passive "Oh where did all these comments about whitewashing come from" decision XD

White people represent the large majority in Hollywood though so it only makes sense.

I don't really have a problem with mikoto. I wasn't even talking about ghost in the shell casting. I know how casting works in Hollywood. They don't have much of a variety of race to choose from. Scarlet looks close enough I'm certain the movie will be shit regardless of who is playing mikoto though so I won't be seeing it unless it gets good reviews.

The problem is this. If we have Japanese characters but are depicted as Caucasian (we're talking multiple people with blond hair and blue eyes), then we only have to deduce that they are Caucasian immigrants.

Secondly, the setting takes place in a fictional Japanese city. Fictional implies a great many things that shouldn't apply to the story.

I'll give disney a chance due to their winning streak for the past few years. As long it is not on some "Dragonball z" or "Avatar: the last air bender" type shit, I'm okay.

But at least they did Cheif right!
