It is difficult to weigh one child's life against a village. If Minato had acted as you said, Kushina might have hated him for the rest of her life, despite it being done for the greater good. Kushina, in the next chapter, will most likely tell Minato to sacrifice herself for Naruto, persuading him by pointing out Naruto has an entire life in front of him, while she has already lived in the hands of a clan blessed with astonishingly long lives and a village rooted in wisdom passed down by men wise and insightful. Minato will most likely comply with what Kushina is saying, and Madara will take control of the Nine-Tailed Fox, unleashing it onto Konoha. And that is where the story picks up; Minato sacrificing his life to seal the Nine-Tails into Naruto. It is not easy to say, because our reactions to uncomfortable situations like these are not always the best, and as a result we suffer because of a faulty decision. But perhaps you are right in saying it would have done for a more important purpose, one upon which many people devote their lives to every day. You have raised a good subject of discussion, one that I hope others contribute to as well, to hear their opinions.
Thanks. I think we definitively have something in common: that we carefully employ diction to make our responses. I also thought that Kushina would do the same thing you said to save Naruto. But despite the fact that Madara controlled the fox I don't think it makes sense that Yondaime had to sacrifice his life and failed to take down his opponent. Wasn't him the greatest hokague? The First was able to beat Madara and also obtain the Nine Tails. Even if Shoodaime used his special ability to control tailed beasts in order to beat Madara, that wouldn't mean he is not stronger than Yondaime. I think it's safe to say that the First was actually the strongest hokage, only followed by Yondaime. Also, after the kyuubi was sealed inside Naruto, why did not Madara finished off Konoha if Yondaime had died? Maybe Yondaime actually hurt him during their fight and he had to retreat...

I agree with all this.and I said something similar in another post,I wondered why after the only person who could stand in his way dies he doesn't continue to destroy konoha or atleast take naruto as his prize and either raise naruto to later extract kyuubi or open the seal all the way to get kyuubi back.

With Madara controlling the Nine-Tails, it quickly became clear to Minato that he had no way of battling the beast (or the man controlling it), and thus chose to seal it into Naruto. He did fail to take down his opponent, but left the task to the village, hoping that with the special power residing in Naruto, they would be able to defeat Madara if he attacked the village again. In my opinion, the First Hokage was the strongest of all Hokages, though the Third Hokage's title of being "the god of Shinobi" could make argument to this claim. I actually think that the Fourth was the second weakest of all the Hokages, because the First Hokage was the most powerful, followed by Tobirama Senju, then Hiruzen Sarutobi, followed by Minato Namikaze, and lastly, Tsunade Senju. The power of each Hokage decreases as a new one is chosen, a observation I made (though it could end up being false); but if Naruto becomes Hokage, he will be the most powerful out of them all. I assume that Madara did not finish off the village because his main reason for unleashing the Nine-Tails on Konoha was to get revenge against the Uchiha and Senju, something that is realized quickly after the attack's conclusion. Perhaps Madara infiltrated Konoha immediately after Minato died just to see how events were playing out. But as far as the destruction of Konoha, I'm not sure if he would singlehandedly be able to do something of that proportion, but in his prime, he might've been able to. Now, it doesn't seem likely. Madara doesn't fight with such flair anymore; he quietly defeats an opponent, and it ends just as quietly as it began.

In a twist of events, Madara could have just taken and trained Naruto in order to destroy the village.

I think Madara was more focused on getting revenge on the village. Or, maybe Danzo was providing Madara with information after making a deal where after Konoha's destruction he would become the new hokage over the survivors. I think this could be possible since when Pain attacked he did not move a finger to defend the village, arguing that the death of some was a necessary sacrifice which at the end would be the best for Konoha...

Madara, specifically, wanted revenge on some of the village's inhabitants, and if it were to mean the destruction of the village, all the better for him. But I do not think Danzo was providing Madara with information because Danzo has always shown a loyalty to Konoha, despite his actions. While he does despise the Hokages, blaming them for being weak when strength was needed, he tries to protect the village, often with misguided means, but always with the intention of keeping Konoha's peace. He did not do anything during Pain's invasion because he needed to stay alive in order for his plans to work; "a necessary sacrifice" can mean just about anything, so we do not know what Danzo meant when he said this to his Root forces, but he was most likely referring to the ninja who would lose their lives in battle, deaths on the road to peace. It is unfortunate for Danzo, though, seeing as how he waited patiently for an oppurtunity to become Hokage to emerge, yet right when he was about to be chosen as the Sixth Hokage, he was killed by Sasuke. Perhaps he waited too long in the shadows, watching all the oppurtunities pass him by, then finally choosing one he thought was ideal, when in fact he might have been able to become the Hokage years earlier.

The thing is the First had this special technique to control the tailed beasts which gave him an advantage against Madara so the Fourth with no such special ability had to fight the Kyuubi head on, and even if he was powerful enough to defeat the Kyuubi the entire village would have been destroyed and then also remain Madara, I think Minato did inflict some damage to Madara and that's why even when Madara saw through everything Minato did as he said Madara couldn't do anything after the Kyuubi was sealed.

The First Hokage was powerful enough to beat Madara at his prime so that means he has to be one of the strongest his brother was also strong but as the storyline says he was killed by some good Jounin Amagakure or some foreign ninjas so in that concept that's very lame and Kabuto also said that he surpassed the users of the Edo Tensei tech Tobirama and Orochimaru so its safe to say Tobirama wasn't invincible. The Third Sarutobi who was at his weakest time as Hokage almost defeated Orochimaru who was at his prime don't need to say anything. The Fourth well we will know about his fight with Madara and the Kyuubi but really think about this he had his special space time tech and he died at such an early age but still thought of so many powerful techs like he created Rasengan, was planning on mixing his elements with Rasengan and also he thought of learning "that jutsu" that he left for Naruto now too bad he died at such an young age its safe to say he would have easily surpassed all of the previous Hokages. Tsunade is actually the weakest Hokage when compared with all the previous ones. So the list is like this First strongest because we know he defeated Madara 3rd and 4th very very strong we haven't really seen them fight at their prime, the 2nd strong and 5th hmm weak when compared to all these guys.

I agree with most of the things said in your post, but it does not say in the manga that Tobirama was defeated by Amegakure ninja. Remember chapter 481? Tobirama told the squad of seven that they were surrounded by twenty Kumogakure master bounty hunters. I'm sure that anyone would be killed when put in such a position. And do not be so quick to write off Tobirama as weak; Danzo himself said that Tobirama, as the Second Hokage, was the strongest Konoha Shinobi during his time, his abilities having often been complimented by several characters throughout the series. I still hold to the opinion that Tobirama was the second strongest of the Hokages, and your saying that Tobirama is not invincible...I think this applies to all human beings, doesn't it? At one point in time Sarutobi might have become as powerful the First Hokage during his term, but I don't think Minato would've surpassed all the Hokages. If he had lived longer, he might have gotten close, but I'm sure he would not have surpassed Hashirama. The only person who can do that at this point is Naruto, with the Nine-Tailed Fox's power. Being a distant relative of the Senju, it would make sense for him to surpass them as well, considering all the other milestones he has broken as the series has gone by. Minato was a powerful ninja, but to say he would be the strongest of the Hokages is an overstatement; many seem to heighten his true strength to levels that aren't even true, mostly because of his Flying Thunder God technique. Last I checked, more impressive techniques have been shown in the series. But due to his early death, the list of Hokages (from most powerful to weakest goes as such, in my opinion): Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju, Hiruzen Sarutobi, Minato Namikaze, and Tsunade Senju. Three out of the five Hokages turned out to be Senju, so Madara's hatred towards the clan is understandable. But as far as Minato being the most powerful of the Hokages, I do not think this is true.

Eh I knew this manga was gonna be a little lame. I mean its good to know the history and all but so many flashback fillers between Naruto and Bleach. Only some of them are good in my opinion. I mean compared to this week's Naruto anime. The fight with Kyuubi vs. Deva Pain was awesome. Best episode in a while. I also loved the facial expressions Pain had during his fight. Sickness...

Maybe when Yondaime sealed away the fox's evil part's chakra with DRS he had a clone also sealing Madara(like what the third did), but failed, and the same thing happened as with Orochimaru, furthering the fact that he's only a shell of his former self.

well first of all, i dont think that madara was the one behind the mask i think its someone else...and if it was madara then i would suspect that it was like orochimaru's bidding... i do believe though that danzou has something to do with all the attacks that madara did...remember the fight where yahiko died? danzou was also present at that time.. you see danzou is the kind of a guy who usurps power for his own gain, i do believe that for madara to live longer he must have contacted danzou first and ask about orochomaru's work about being immortal, hence the reason why those arms look young and also i do think that's why madara cannot make use of all his power coz of that tech... :) remember when orochimaru had to use another body and it keep on rejecting him till he cant no longer control it so he had to use it on sasuke even though it wasnt the perfect time yet? just a thought tho

That's possible, but I'm not a fan of the theory that Madara used the same jutsu as Oro did, besides, if he did, the best time would've been the uchiha massacre, where he was present to help Itachi with the same mask the masked man was wearing. I guess that's something to strengthen the Madara + immortality jutsu theory.

As for the whole Hokage power line...I think that the 1st was to date the most powerfull. Then Sarutobi, then Tobirama, then Tsunade and then Minato. Why?

1st- Mokuton, large chakra, great experience, controlling tailed beasts, etc. Obviously the strongest.

Sarutobi- Even if he didn't use any special element, he used almost all elements, being stated as the one who knew all justu in Konoha. Strong taijutsu, Strong jutsu, medium to high chakra. Very wise and experienced in battle.

Tobirama- Strong water techniques (one of the most powerfull in the whole naruto world so far), creator of several techniques, enourmous chakra, great taijutsu.

Tsunade- Beserk strength, great summons, great experience, great chakra, great knowledge of overall jutsu and battle techniques, best medical ninja in the world so far, immortal when creation rebirth is activated, advanced knowledge in sealing jutsu.

Minato- talent for creating tchniques, knowledge in advanced sealing tchniques, strong techniques unique to him (like the thunder god), but way to young to have the power of any of the others. He died before he could "grow" any more as a shinobi.

Naruto, if he becomes the next one, still isn't the most powerfull one. The 1st was Super-Uber strong... It will be dificult to find someone more powerfull than him...

You have a point, but I still think Minato would beat Tsunade, after all, he can summon too, Tsunade can't hit him etc.
