Ok, went back to watch a clip of it. He didnt hurt him. But look at the shockwave from it throwing dozens of fodder flying. Gaara can tank that?

Gaara outlasts him worst case scenario.
With a desert worth of sand, Chouji isn't much of a threat when Gaara could bury him with a massive amount of sand which was powerful enough to tank C3 so I doubt Chouji can physically overpower it.
