Shikamaru had Kakashi defer to him. Kakashi........that feat alone makes any argument irrelevant. I can't name you any other character in this series whom Kakashi would take a backseat to, and let them handle all the planning/ tactics.

Orochimaru states Sasuke will surpass Madara: That is his opinion. Madara later goes on to cast the entire world in a genjutsu and attain immortality.
