I really wonder if branching out this much is a good idea. Maybe they're hoping that something catches on since FT can't keep spawning dark guilds forever.

Not much of the info is revealed yet. Likely it is going to be drawn by Kyota Shibano, the very same mangaka who drew Sabertooth spin off. In this Gajeel's spin off....we are going to learn his past and his relationship with Elder Belno & his life as a prisoner(?). Not sure about the setting but we have to wait for the chapter I guess.

It looks like Mashima decided to give more depth to the background story/characters/guilds which is not much known. Can't blame him tho. FT never intended to go this long. So, I think this is his way to build the background and bring forth some plot-lines which might become included in the original storyline.
