Hitting your child only shows a lack of control and ability as a parent. It's just conditioning another to do certain things based on a constant presence of fear.

There are other ways to express discipline that could actually teach your child a lesson as well as gain their respect.

You'd be surprised how disrespectful some kid's can be to their own parents. So if talking to them and grounding them doesn't work, go for it. Of course I don't mean beating them tell they bleed.

No, I don't believe in violence as a form of punishment as all your doing is teaching your kid it's okay to hit somebody if they do something wrong and besides most of the time kids will just repeat the same thing

Talking and explaining why something is wrong is how I'd do it

Slapping your kid is just a temporary solution and it doesn't inforce respect just fear

Well, yes, your generation was raised by parents who believed arguing with two year olds was a productive means of instilling responsible behavioral values.

The rates of suicide and mental disorder are on the rise, generally, because of parents who believe their job is to raise a best buddy.

The job of a parent is to shape and mold a child into a functional and responsible individual capable of entering into society on his or her own. From the looks of things, your parents fell a bit short of the mark.

up til a certain age, that's all they really respond well too. and as long as you're measured and reasonable about it, it shouldn't cause long term issues.

Actually I did receive physical punishment, and there are other means of teaching a lesson then intimidation and fear. Taking away video games, extra work, cutting the lawn etc all works. Physical punishment might work for some kids but they can damage a kid too especially if ever a parent happens to be stupider, however other means as mentioned works on both and doesn't have as many negative effects. Therefore violence is alternate to incapable parent, not that I care about what they do or that not everyone is capable of dealing w/o violence, doesn't change the facts though.

I take full responsibility for this part, one comment of op doesn't mean much, but I don't care enough to argue about random people's opinion about that on the Internet.
