I think these are fair points, especially when Ukitake gets brought up and chapter 511.

He did trick everyone with just his initial sword release. What's to say he didn't show them an illusion of a bankai, because he didn't have one?
You may be right. However, yamamato could recognize the reiatsu of zampakto(including kyoka suigetsu). I think he could tell if his sword was still in shikai or bankai form

Then that bankai is op. I've always had the theory it was complete mind control.

Isn't having a bankai a requirement to being a captain?
There ars 3 ways to become a captain

1. Captain Proficiency Test: A test which requires the ability to perform Bankai. Nearly all Shinigami become captains using this method. At least three existing captains, including the Captain-Commander, have to witness the test.

2. Personal Recommendation: To have personal recommendations from at least six captains and approval from at least three of the remaining seven.

3. Trial by Combat: To defeat a captain one-on-one with at least 200 witnesses from the captain's division. This method is seen as being the exceedingly rarest and the least refined of the three. The method is commonly looked down upon by some captains as barbaric compared to the other refined methods. This method allows one to bypass having the mastery of Bankai or other possible abilities which a captain would otherwise be required to have knowledge of, for it allows no judgment from captains who would require those skills as a prerequisite to join their ranks. Though rare in other Divisions, the Eleventh Division has been set up to exclusively utilize this method, with each captain attaining their rank by killing the predecessor

Zaraki didn't even have shikai until this last arc

Beat me to it. It's actually a pretty well thought out system when you look at it.

Aizen took over the position as Captain of the 5th Division after Hirako Shinji's "disappearance", so the 3rd method is out of the question here. I'd imagine that the most likely method Aizen used was to become a Captain was the second method, given his extreme ability. However, it is arguable that he ever displayed his true capabilities as a Captain before betraying the Gotei, so the 1st method is still possible. I wouldn't doubt that Aizen has a Bankai, since all of the time he's ever been using his Shikai, only using the 1st release was necessary. He never found a need to use a Bankai, especially due to the power of his Shikai. Also, don't forget that Aizen never went all-out against any of his opponents until his final battle against Ichigo. It is in his nature to simply entertain the notion of his opponent's winning, and then take that hope away from them, which links back to his nature of desiring or having complete control over others. He plays with his opponents, and only uses his overwhelming strength when necessary. As he once said, it takes a lot of effort for him not to crush an ant in his path, and he was referring to Renji in that sentence. Using his Reiatsu, he could kill a Shinigami of Vice-Captain strength. A being whose strength has been conditioned and refined to that extent without a Bankai is nigh inconceivable.
