Naruto was caught because it was a trap. When they jumped in the lake it placed everyone in a genjutsu. But he was manipulating the genjutsu. The genjutsu trap worked by placing everyone in their own world that showed them their past. The fact Naruto left his world and entered Hinata's world and then freely moved throughout her world proved he was manipulating the genjutsu because the genjutsu didn't work that way.
