He miiight have been able to obtain Rinnegan eventually, if Tobi were out of the picture. But if Sasuke been alone, Danzo undoubtedly would've beaten him by the end. Danzo would've had Kotoamtsukami in one eye and Amaterasu in the other. If he told Naruto about Sasuke's death, he'd be enraged and the Kyuubi would've broken free. Which would have then been susceptible to Danzo's two Mangekyo.. Through Fuinjutsu he could've been made into the Kyuubi's Jinchuriki..

While it's true that Danzo has development, his way was always selfish and conceded. He's nothing but a bitter old man that got butthurt because he didn't become Hokage, so his result being of hiding in the shadows and giving orders to his anbu fodder.

Although he did have the village's interest at heart, in the end, it was all for himself. He was full of envy and didn't care what he had to do to become Hokage.

He went about things the wrong way, such as the Uchiha assassination, which caused many problems later on such as Itachi's actions and Sasuke's revenge on Itachi and the village which resulted in mixed emotions for Sasuke.

There's also the fact that he didn't help when Pain attacked Kohona.

You might consider Danzo's way to be realistic or 'the right way' but in the end, he only wanted what was best for him.

Why anybody would even bother to like this character is beyond me. He's an ugly piece of shit that needs Uchiha power to best his opponents, and quite ironic that he uses the one power from Orochimaru when the Uchiha clan was what he decided to destroy in the past.

There was no need to kill everybody in the clan. Not everyone was a threat. Just the shinobi who had power, so by default he was evil for initiating an attack on innocent people.
