read above. The clam didn't have any effects on Gengetsu's oil. Gaara and other ninjas could see the oil shitting on the sand.
Lol the mirage Gengetsu outright stated wide range, which made Gaara to use contact sense away from his battle location and kept an eye to keep track on Onoki's movement for support. Noting ever implied short range.

As you see, the clam can't be that far from its target.
Except he has no idea where it is. So Naruto ends up moving location the mirages brings him. While Naruto attempts to run on it by sheer luck, Gengetsu has enough tim to kill him.
