Summoning technique is a unique kind of ninjutsu in which a ninja, by sacrificing a bit of blood and chakra, the user casts this space-time ninjutsu whcih brings a beast of the contract you summoned. It's to say, if I signed a contract with a pig and I made that jutsu, the pig would come.
It's important to notice that the chakra you sacrifice is proportional to the size of the animale you summon. The bigger, the more chakra.
The summonned animal can be later dismiss bby a variety of reasons, like getting seriously hurt, exhaustation and the summonner's will.
Summoning is not only for animals but too for ninja tools as seen in sasuke's uchiha's shuriken summoning tatoos, tenten's scroll or sasori's puppets.

*cracks knucles* oh some day...shikaku. ok so now I must sign...*he apporches to the open scroll. Now he sees a open slot, bites his right thumb finger*

* and, smears his bloody signature onto the contract. then he touches each of his right fingertips with his thumb and places his hand on the contract*

Description:To summon the creature the ninja will wipe blood on the hand, perform the necessary handseals and then touch their hand to the ground or another object. Though it appears that as long as significant pressure is placed against the blood in some form, the summon will be complete. There can be variations to the summoning steps, some ninja like Temari will wipe blood on her fan, then by swinging the fan the animal is summoned. Other ninja like Orochimaru wipe the blood across a snake tattoo on their arm first, then touch the ground.

yes, shikaku! *does handseals yet again, concentrates his chakra. When it reaches peak to summon a hawk-size swallow, he opens the wound on his left thumb and smears a bit of blood on his hand. Then he touches the ground...*Summoning-jutsu, Kane the iron swallow!*In a puff of white smoke, a iron feathered swallow appears. His razor-sharp feathers shine in the sun as it emergers triunphally from the smoke*

ok choza, listen carefully. this swallow is able to shoot an iron featherstorm that is very useful for distractions and for attacking your opponent.
lets move on into another swallow.
this one is Kane?s brother and has a similar abbility. he has fire affinity and conbines this with a featherstorm that he makes and then the feathers explote by just clicking his beak.(this is similar to the feathers that that giant summon had in the thrid shippuden movie)

no, the swallow is not capable of performing ink jutsus only the paralizing genjutsu.
and i will make sure to find that secret food..

this medium size swallow has the abbility to concentrate lighting chakra by combining his two wings , each of his wings has opposite polarities.
ok try to summon Kertou and lest see if he can do a simple lightning attack..
