Doton is the concentration of earth-natured chakra and it's release with handseals in order to manipulate the sourrounding ground and stones. The most commonly associated seal with doton is the snake seal as kakashi stated in the fight agasint kakuzu.
About it's weaknesses, doton is weak to raiton which simple tears the rocks aparte or solidifies mud based attacks like the swamp of the underworld.
About it's strengths, in elemental pentagon, it beats water because it mixes with it turning it heavier and less manageable and due to the hardness of the rocks which are unmovable by the water currents.
Doton is an amazing combination of defensive and offensive moves, plus the escaping possibiliies it provides with techniques like the underground fish projection.
Doton means to me being one with the earth, it's one of my favourite elements.

Pretty good description, however doton isnt strong against water because it mixes with it and turns it heavier. It's stronger because of it's density. And lightning doesnt solidifie mud, but fire can do it.
Ok, so let's start with the basis.
Sit on the ground and meditate. Mix your chakra with the earth around you and feel the earth.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!*eyes turn bloodshot as he concentrates a humongous quiantity of chakra into the already hardening mud, each time it flowed to it and back it turned harder and harder.* c'mon mud, turn into rock!!

Now inject your chakra on the rock again and shape it like a pyramid. Think and see the picture of a pyramid on your head and try to shape it like that.

Once the image is crystal clear in his head, he begins to mold the chakra into the de-formed rock to shape like a perfect pyramid* I'd better keep the flow steady...*The rock finishes solidfying, into a perfect pyramid*.
