Why do fancy Karin?

She's not shown much on panel, but when she is shown, I like seeing the way she presents herself and her interaction with her teammates, especially with Suigetsu. I like her flirtatious desire to be with Sasuke because it makes her have her own personality. She isn't always like this though. Sometimes she will take a little hit on Sasuke and talk about him, but at the end she will go back to flirting with him. That's why I find her funny.

We don't know the specifics about the Uzumaki clan, but it was good to hear that she came from that clan, and being able to aquire a justu that only they have was cool.

Her character design is great. It matches her character and it brings a more 'naughty secretary look' or one that is in control of what she wants. I like her hair and her eyes. Her glasses fit so well with her creation too.

Her life living with Orochimaru - well I always liked people who were under Orochimaru for some reason like Kimimaro and Tayuya. It just seemed like those type of people had a way of doing things themselves without having to be under some political village. Karin goes under that category too.

I like her because she is alone, doesn't have any family, clan was destroyed, but can still act the way she does. I like her because she is very loyal to team Taka when they were formed. That said, here's my take on her love for Sasuke and their relationship: It started off as nothing more than a school girl crush, the same as Ino, the same as all the other girls in the academy that had a crush on him. But being put on his squad changed things. Sakura, similar to Naruto, saw all the pain surrounding him, and wanted to help him. In Naruto trying to help Sasuke, they became like brothers. With Sakura's attempts, her natural crush turned to love. He was no longer just some cool attractive dude, he was a proper person that she respected and wanted to help and look after. I think you can just about see this development through the manga and anime, but due to Kishi being a sort of bad writer in this department, it's hard to pick up. I totally get why people only see a stupid school girl crush and nothing more. But I think Sakura's relationship with Sasuke goes a lot deeper. Far deeper than Karin or Ino's... like, that's so obviously just one sided crushing in my opinion, with Sakura and Sasuke you get limited but actual interaction.

So her love is similar to that of Naruto's platonic undying love for Sasuke. They both were drawn to his loneliness and wanted to 'save' him, though Sakura fell in love with him, and Naruto, evidentially being a heterosexual dude, loved him as a brother. Once you understand that, her undying love isn't that strange. Naruto loved Sasuke despite all his crimes and trying to kill him and stuff, and so did Sakura.

They're basically the same person, but Karin gets away with things Sakura doesn't because of her being an Uzumaki. Here's an analysis I wrote a few weeks ago


One big difference between Karin and Sakura is Karin's background in comparison to Sakura. Karin's entire village was burned to the ground and every villager murdered, including her family. As the sole survivor, who knows how long she wandered around before Orochimaru found her and took her in. He's the worst possible person to provide with a sense of purpse and identity, but he does. He groomed her from a young child, and of course she clings to the perceived generosity, being too young or naive to know any better. She was subjected to experimentation and all manners of cruel and painful shit. She grew up in Orochimaru's labs, being subjected to all manner of depraved behavior and sights. Perhaps, in this way, seeing Sasuke's smile again may have reminded her of some sort of light, probably one of the few true acts of kindness she can remember receiving. So yeah, Karin's horny and aggresive, but considering the way she grew up, I think "I just wanted to see you smile again" is a pretty rare kindness and humanity for one to still possess.

Meanwhile, we have Sakura. Both parents alive and loving. Multitudes of friends. One of her friend's only desire in their friendship was to see her truly blossom and reach her fullest potential. Two of her friends, as well as her first friend, are willing to die for her. Had a normal, trauma free childhood. Has people constantly trying to protect her. Trained by two legendary ninjas. Lives in one of the strongest villages surrounded by people who care about each other. She has and had more than 95% of the characters in this manga, and she displays less backbone, self esteem, and substance than a side character who had virtually none of the things she was blessed to have in her life. My point being that Karin's depravity can be understood through her depraved upbringing. Its not an excuse, but we don't have to expect much from her. Meanwhile, Sakura is the heroine of the series and is content with being treated like garbage and her highest aspiration is getting this guy that makes her feel like shit to be with her, and can't even drudge up any substantial or intelligent thoughts about his person or communicate anything of depth about her feelings .

Another difference is that Karin is made of tougher stuff than Sakura. Perhaps its why Sakura looks just as pathetic in comparison. While Karin didn't shed a tear when Sasuke tried to kill her, Sakura breaks down. While Sakura's world comes to a screeching halt when Sasuke doesn't notice her in the face of one of the strongest ninja in the world, Karin wouldn't have batted an eye. She may be horny, but Sasuke's brusque or otherwise plain manner of expressing himself doesn't tear away at her self esteem the way it does Sakura. Even normal things, such as telling her she can't come with him on his redemption journey, send her spiraling into self pity and angst.

This isn't some anti Sakura, pro-Karin thing, but it is sad that the main heroine and girl in the pairing is really no different than the character they love to bash in comparison, and practically anything that can be said about one doubles back on the other. Like the manga shows, Sakura's sole advantage and relevance to Sasuke being she was on Team 7, and any Sasuke fangirl on his team would have gotten the D just the same. Sad, but hilarious.

She is an Uzumaki that is still around along with her unique traits that tends to make her stand out at times, especially when she single-handedly defeated Spiral Zetsu with brute force alone. Plus unlike Sakura, she (at one point) had the guts to put her foot down when Sasuke went too far with her in terms of the Danzo betrayal.

The thing I like about Karin's character the most is the fact that it's deceptively deep. At first glance, Karin is just your typical Sasuke fangirl. Dwell a little deeper though, and you realise just how atypical she is. For one, she's not afraid to call Sasuke out/be rude to him, unlike say Sakura who is like this rarely. In other words, she's comfortable being herself[/B} around Sasuke. That, combined with her somewhat tragic background and humorous moments, make her a decent character in my book.
