To us the reader. That doesn't mean it wasn't shown within the story that we never saw, there are things that happen that we don't see. i.e. on the way to Dressrosa someone (law maybe) could have asked what will you do to fight Doflamingo and then Luffy shows them gear 4. Obviously that hasn't happened I was just curious if you think he showed any of the crew before using it in battle.

Like what? Travelling on a boat without enemies? Do you seriously think G4 won't have severe consequences? Would he waste it before even going to Dressrosa?

Luffy stated that he used G4 for a time span of 2 years in order to defeat the enormous monsters he encountered in the island. Luffy should have been able to reduce the after effects of G4 to a bare minimum.

We don't know how far into the timeskip he developed it. We don't know how long it took to reduce the effects of the lower gears, it's highly likely he had to neutralise his lower gears to even start developing G4

dark knight told luffy to learn to use his abilities to the fullest and used aiming bullets with his body.
i think luffy learned to use his df way past what is shown. i see a g4 gattling that way don can heal himself with string
