I think it was a bad choice to let him live on Kishi's part. To each their own but I think it would of been cooler if Gai went out in a blaze of glory.

Made no difference really. He still ended up disabled and in a wheelchair. Which to be honest is kind of sad, kishi could have just killed him off instead of having the once great Might Guy stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

Same deal as Kakashi, you take away his sharingan/his signature. Should have just killed him after that, he wasn't Kakashi for me anymore after that.

IMO, Gai should have died. Would have been a much more epic and manly ending to the guy than sticking him in a wheelchair. Especially with all the flashbacks that we were getting with him too. It would have been a good death but only if he would have been able to cripple Madara or hinder his success in getting the second Rinnegan. I felt like Kishi just wanted to show off Naruto's new powers tbh. Gai could have been a much greater war hero had he died using the 8 Gates. The only reason I'm glad he lived was so that Kakashi would not lose someone else he held dear in his life.

I don't know why everyone was so surprised Kishi let him live. He let countless others live through things that would 'surely kill you'. Not to mention he had an entire village consisting of hundreds of people get revived.
