Yeah, but at least his death was acknowledged by those around him. The most disappointing parts were his lack of Part II screentime and Kishi's cupid comment.

His death was the cause of them getting closer. So his death was never a waste. Also show me where Kishi stated that his death was supposed to instantly make them pair up with each other?

They did not grow closer as Hinata is still timid with Naruto in the movie afraid to approach him and Naruto is still clueless.My point is that same moment(the handhold) could have been replicated in another way without a character death.If a character as close as a cousin dies I expect it to be at least referenced in the final pairing build up which it wasnt
