After watching Kurenei and Asuma vs. Itachi and Kisame again, I was wondering how does the Sharingan counter Genjutsu exactly? It seems Itachi was actually in Kurenei's genjutsu yet was able to reverse it on her. We know a sharingan user can see changes in chakra color and can differentiate genjutsu chakra usage.

Considering this. and knowing a large portion of Itachi vs. Sasuke was fought in Genjutsu, are Sharingan users simply aware of being in a Genjutsu and can simply manipulate things while in the Genjutsu? Ie Itachi swapping the Genjutsu on Kurenei or Itachi and Sasuke stalemating in Genjutsu. This would mean they are not simply immune to genjutsu, rather are masters of it.

Any insight would be appreciated, but I'd prefer not going too deep into the rabbit hole.

seeing how she was the one that got genjustu'd instead I'd say he already had her on genjustu.

-The sharingan's perception increases the users awareness making them easily spot genjutsu. This is half of what one needs to do to cancel genjutsu

- Breaking genjutsu requires skill, the sharingan users you've seen so far just happen to be very good at dealing with genjutsu. Their eye allows them to deconstruct the genjutsu and that combined with their own knowledge in genjutsu makes it easier for them to break out of it

- Itachi reversed kurenai's genjutsu by first copying the illusion when he saw her hand seals, breaking the illusion and then casting her own illusion back on her when he made eye contact with her.

The jutsu Itachi used is called as 'Demonic Illusion: Mirror Heaven and Earth Change'.
It is a sharingan genjutsu reversal technique, where user reverses the genjutsu casted upon him, after figuring out that, he himself is in genjutsu. He then uses sharingan to reverse the jutsu and put his opponent in the same genjutsu, using only sharingan.

Hmm... sounds right. But I'm not sure if there is actual breaking of Genjutsu going on. Breaking of Genjutsu, as I see it, is altering your chakra in a way where the illusion cancels out. Like Naruto's case in the Shippuden fight with Itachi. Itachi copying Kurenei's genjutsu then canceling and recasting it on her in a millisecond.... I find that hard to believe.

Rather, I'd say he was aware of being in her genjutsu. Then just as she thought she'd kill him, he simply altered the reality within the genjutsu they were both sharing, reversing it on her. Like Sasuke vs. Itachi, they were sharing a genjutsu fighting eachother and each were doing their best to take the advantage in the fight.

Are you saying he doesn't actually cancel the one cast on him them? Simply alters the genjutsu forcing it upon her?

Nope he didn't.
He actually reversed the genjutsu. What further solidifies this fact is, the effects produced due to genjutsu(immobilization and opponent appearing just in front of you) were quiet similar in both the cases when Kurenai put Itachi under it and when Itachi reversed the genjutsu on Kurenai.

Ok so you'd agree that they were then sharing a genjutsu and Itachi had the mastery to alter the Genjutsu to his liking?

This would open more questions about genjutsu though. Are all genjutsu's conducted in a matter of seconds like Itachi's Tsukyomi? Point being, if someone must concentrate to take part in a genjutsu cast on an opponent, that would leave them quite vulnerable in the real world.

I believe because it wasn't a powerful Genjutsu Kurenai used Itachi just brute forced the genjutsu laying his own genjutsu on top of it.

Well Kurenei is considered strong in genjutsu, for a regular shinobi that is. So perhaps Sharingan users are simply so good at genjutsu that they are capable of overcoming strong genjutsu, just making it look easy.
