I don't think Ichigo will follow a mortal path, it is still plausible that he will become the soul king but unlikely, I think it is more likely that he will become the head captain of the Royal Guard

however shunsui did tell his friends to come say their goodbyes cause he most likely wont be able to come back. so this would be the canon reference to refer to, though its the same thing. more or less.
