Another tale of mangaka clashing with their editors.
Toriyama got his nuts bruised by his editors during the Android/Cell saga.
Toriyama wanted the Androids who destroyed Trunks' future to be #19 and #20. You know, the old man and the fat albino. His editors made him change it to the inf energy #17 and #18.
Then when Cell showed up, it was the editors who told him to change Cell's design to look more like Frieze. The bug form was ugly and the big lipped second form looked stupid to them.
Also SSJ2 was the editors idea. Originally Gohan was going to get really, really pissed and blast Cell to dust in his base form. The editors made Toriyama make Gohan a SSJ and later SSJ2 through rage.
If you want to see what happens when the editors don't intervene, look no further than the Buu Saga. Toriyama had a lot more creative control on the story and characters and it showed.
Gohan going to HS. For no reason
Gohan being a superhero. For no reason.
Gohan being weak enough that his 7 year old brother can give him a hard time. For no reason.
The terror of the universe, said by the Kai's to be a thousand times more powerful than frieza! Is a fat, pink, bubble gum monster, wearing yellow rain boots, a diaper, a purple cape and a phallic appendage on his forehead that turns people in to candy.
And this creature was meant to fight an 8 year old fused Saiyan with super long blonde hair and no eyebrows (SSJ3's look).
Clearly this was a story Toriyama had inside of him that he NEEDED to get out.
All for Toriyama to change his mind at the last minute and make Goku the hero... Again.
