A person you love and care about has been diagnosed as a psychopath.

A person you know, love and care about has been diagnosed as a psychopath. Be it your grandparents, parents, siblings, family relatives, spouse, children or a dear friend.

How would you feel?

Keep in mind that a psychopath is different from a sociopath. Sociopaths can still feel emotion and even empathy. Sociopaths tend to be nervous and easily agitated. They are volatile and prone to emotional outbursts, including fits of rage.

They are likely to be uneducated and live on the fringes of society, unable to hold down a steady job or stay in one place for very long. It is difficult but not impossible for sociopaths to form attachments with others.

Many sociopaths are able to form an attachment to a particular individual or group, although they have no regard for society in general or its rules. In the eyes of others, sociopaths will appear to be very disturbed.

Psychopaths, on the other hand, are unable to form emotional attachments or feel real empathy with others, although they often have disarming or even charming personalities.

Psychopaths are very manipulative and can easily gain people’s trust. They learn to mimic emotions, despite their inability to actually feel them, and will appear normal to unsuspecting people. Psychopaths are often well educated and hold steady jobs.

Some are so good at manipulation and mimicry that they have families and other long-term relationships without those around them ever suspecting their true nature.

Also be advised that even though psychopaths are the most dangerous of all the antisocial personality disorders, this does not make them killers. It just makes it easier for them to kill.

Psychopathy is related to a physiological defect that results in the underdevelopment of the part of the brain responsible for impulse control and emotions. Sociopathy, on the other hand, is more likely the product of childhood trauma and physical/emotional abuse.

Discuss away.

eh idk i wouldn't really care as long as its not my gf. based off the description of a psychopath its a normal person who just doesn't give a shit about your life. i love psychology and studying humans so honestly would take this as somewhat of a gift and study the person and hope that they are as manipulative as described and watch its every move. plus like you said it doesn't make them killers so 8/10 chance it won't try to kill me

If they're a psychopath then I can discard feeling for them and stop caring.

I think I would study and observe him/her more and approach them differently but not to the point that it's noticeable. I'd probably try to make sure they don't do anything stupid or try to make him/her look at the world in a way where they don't need to harm even if they don't care. I don't know, I might even learn a few tricks from him/her.

If they're a psychopath then I can discard feeling for them and stop caring.
Unless you're a psychopath or a sociopath I don't think it's that easy to stop caring about a loved one.

It would make my guard go up around them. Probably by a factor of 10.
If it was a bf or husband, I would probably end the relationship. I couldn't trust someone with that disorder.

I am related to a sociopath. That description sounded way too familiar.

A diagnosis is just a word. If their selfish, destructive behavior hasn't bothered you yet, a sudden diagnosis shouldn't change the way you feel about them. Sociopathy isn't a DSM diagnosis though, those criteria fall under the category of a personality disorder, namely Antisocial and Narcissistic. An antisocial would create much more chaos, but many people are married to narcissists; just ask the wives of 90% of all lawyers and politicians what it feels like.

You make them sound like aliens, they have a mental illness

I would to help them of course or I just wouldn't be bothered, there are a lot worse people in the world than a psychopath.

For instance if I found out my loved one was a pedo or a rapist, I would slit their throat, I would much rather have a psychopath

I don't really understand your comment. Most pedophiles and rapists are sociopaths.

That is difficult...we discussed something similar to this before, and those types of people are the sole monkey wrenches in my hope for what the world could be (or something like that). I don't know if I could go through with it, and it makes me sick to even imagine, but my first thought would be that the easiest solution is to...eliminate them :/

They are just too dangerous (that's not the right word but I can't think right now). :(

But this is about psychopath's not sociopaths and I didn't know that, thank you.

But even so, if they were a sociopath or psychopath, if they were not a pedo, rapist or murderer I would stick by them

That would be a really sad thing to know. Psychopaths are ill, so I think the best way to help them is to put them in a mental health institution.

The difference is primarily in semantics. Some people believe sociopaths are people who break social norms due to environmental factors and psychopaths break social norms because of environmental and biological factors (though there isn't enough empirical research to support this). Most people use the terms interchangeably.
