Is this the right section?

Anyway. We are all manga fans, many of us have thought about drawing our own manga but many Manga fans seem to be purists, in truth I can understand, I am yet to encounter a manga by a western artist that could be counted as Manga. Manga is not just an art style it embodies a culture, it may not be a cultural experience but it is defined by the fact that it comes from Japan, the country and people are seeped into it, and when someone draws big eyed characters, calls one Paul and the other Stephanie and set it in Soho, well, its not manga any more.

Can manga be copied?, certainly but if it was done well, if it embodied all the things we know and love in manga, if no one was trying to break it by pushing there own culture on it, turning it into a Western comic book and calling it manga to sell it, would you read it if the name on the front was Joe Blogs?

Wouldn't it turn out something like Avatar series, more easily? And then we would get Western cultural spice like at the ending of Korra? Not that it cannot be done.

I'm reading manga by Casual Misfit. I guess I can call it reading a "manga" by a non Japanese since he is from Britain. :p

well there are mangas which tell western stories. ever read Berserk? there isnt one single japanese guy in there.... the whole story takes place in a europe similar world... yet its like the most famous fantasy manga there is.. is that considered a manga despite the fact it tells a sstory which takes place in europe?

tbh i dont see a big difference between a comic and a manga other than the difference in style/story telling etc. mangas are usually linear while comics have a shit ton of different writers and artists...

Manga? Comic book? Where's the difference? If I like a story, I'll continue reading it, and that is all.

Umm. You mean old west or what..
But yeah, basically I would read whatever anyone feeds irregardless of what it's labeled and what that label signifies.
I don't have a clue if West is right or left, or if the western hemisphere contains Japan.

But I'm not about to allow a preference for a specific culture stop me from reading into it...

That would basically be a comic then. I'd rather read manga.

What I've never really understood is, why the heck do most people on here don't like comic books just because they're comic books?

Not really. It's the style of writing and type of content. For some maybe Superheroes of slightly different kind ( less angsty/emo ones) .

Selective Genre/ tropes make manga somewhat liner but it also makes it easier to pick a story with the elements you are looking for. Usually written by a single writer so you get to see individual styles and stories by that very author. There maybe tons of things..but very simple things really. Why one prefers one kind of book over another varies.

You can rename any comic series Good Vs Evil and not a single one I know of would be misnamed.

Oh, so all comics boil down to good vs evil? I'm really interested in how Naruto is nothing but over powered good vs evil stuff now.

This is a comparison between manga and comics, not Naruto and comics.

ok so how is superman more about good vs. evil than naruto?

But I never said Naruto is better than Superman, I said mangas are better than comics. This doesn't mean all mangas are good.
However, for the sake of discussion, most of the villains in Naruto are motivated by what they believe to be the best interest of the world and view their own actions positively, while among two of the villains from Superman, that I can recall, one is motivated by greed and the other by a concept of specie supremacy and the belief of an inherent right to rule over humans. This makes the "Good Vs Evil" theme stronger in superman than in Naruto in my opinion, but I'm in no way denying that it's present in both. As I said, this isn't Naruto Vs Anything, this is manga vs comics.

You would need to be japanese to make a manga iirc but i wouldn't mind reading a manga influenced comic book.

But do you? Isn't that like saying you need to be American to create a superhero comic?
mangas are just japanese comics, There's a superhero manga it's called one punch man. Anyways i guess you can make a manga but it would be next to impossible to be a success.

My point exactly. There are quite a few serious themed comics with characters with shades of grey, just like manga. It'd be dumb to say that Mangas are better than comics. Just because you dont like comics as much as manga, doesn't mean that all manga are better by default.

I call everything a manga, i don't read comic books so i dunno what the difference between comic books and mangas overall i'll enjoy it as much as reading 'manga', if it's good of course.
