I'm actually starting to like the Fairy Ice Trail series. First I found the art too much of a letdown, but I'm getting used to it.

Gildarts & Gray's story is interesting. I never thought that these two would had such a story and I found it pretty weird that their relationship wasn't mentioned in original story. If I remember correctly Gildarts always had Natsu as his no1 guild kid.

Because their relationship is probably not that special. It has already been stated before that Gildarts is very well liked and respected by everyone in the guild. He is someone all of them look up to. When he first was introduced in the series, he immediately informed Natsu about Acnologia and wanted to know how Natsu was doing with Lisana. In Cana's flash-back it was also shown he encouraged her for the S-class mage exam.

This is simply how Gildarts is. That he picked up Gray somewhere, had an adventure with him and then brought him to the guild isn't anything special from his point of view. It didn't create a stronger bond or a special relationship with Gray that's different from Natsu and the other guild members. Hence it doesn't have to be mentioned.

And as said it's highly doubtful that Hiro planned all of this out from the get-go.
