Well I suck at physics, though I know that lightning/electricity always searches for the fastest way to the earth.
They send an electrical discharge through the ice, which was so strong it cracked the ice. The patterns you see are places where the lightning has been.
As it is a closed space, the lightning can't get out and the sparks you see are the remnants that are over and are just travelling through it for some moments. By breaking the ice the ligthning looses a lot of energy and as it can't get out, it will be neutralized when it doesn't have the strength anymore to break the ice.

thats correct, the electricity went through the hammer, cause it was closer to go that way, the moment he removes the hammer, the electricity runs through the ice.
At first he had a complete circuit with the hammer and the other thing he was holding, when he removes the hammer, the electricity needs to find a new way
