So I'm looking to upgrade my desktop once again and I have four options

Option 1. Overclock
the only reason I'm hesitant about overclocking my system is because of the risk of frying not only my CPU but my Motherboard, ram and anything else that might be affected by that.

Option 2. New CPU
the only CPU on Newegg that is compatible with my current motherboard would move it from a 2.1 Ghz to 3.0 Ghz which is quite the speed upgrade but it also costs 55 dollars but it is the cheaper of the two new component options

Option 3. New CPU/Mobo and/or Ram
this is the more expensive of the upgrades but it also might be the one that I end up doing if I decide to do any. The first link would work with my current ram, but If i decided to get the new core i3 from intel i would have to get DDR3 ram which would add another 100 dollars for 4 gigs of DDR3 1066

Option 4. Do nothing
Exactly as it sounds, not spend the money and just continue with what I have which is almost 3 years old

before I go to my ideas, I would like to ask you
what do you like inside your computer? Games? Videos?
well its a multipurpose rig, I game, watch videos, do some video editing since my laptop can't handle it, use it as a server to stream video and music to my Xbox and Ps3

ok

I recommend that you will buy at least 2.1Ghz CPU and a motherboard that is not too expensive and can jack up with the highest RAM in the store.

I advice is you can buy plenty of RAMS while your motherboard is not so high-end(just right of model). Because pcgames rely the number of RAMS. ALso buy the video card that is the minimum requirement of the pcgames .... 64 or 128mb?

about multimedia and CS well it will go with the flow of your computer.

well my current CPU is 2.1 Ghz and i'm looking to upgrade to the 3.0Ghz model. as for the RAM i did have six gigs total but one of the 2 gig sticks just stopped working.

and my graphics card is a EVGA GT240 Superclocked 512mb DDR5 128bit

can't really answer your question, but I have question on my own. My video card fried up and I'm thinking about buying a new one. Which is the best of current cards for gaming which would cost about 50GBP?

In my opinion, your motherboard is fine 2.1Ghz is okay, you only have to see how many Front Side Buss (FSB) your motherboard and I think this would matter for adding speed to the computer. 3.0Ghz is freaking awesome but it can match up with lower Ghz in terms of smoothness on gaming in addition with high RAMS and cool video cards. I mean, it doesn't need to have higher Ghz to have higher and cool gadgets to attain nice gaming.

I remember way before that I have 2.1Ghz (those were the years that 2.1-2.5Ghz are the highest Ghz in store) and 128mb video cards with 2Gb DDR's. I was satisfied on my gaming and runs smoothly. But when I visited my friends who had 1.8Ghz and 64mb Geforce(I forgot the model but its the hottest video card for gaming) with 2Gb DDR's can match up/can equalize my computer. The games run smoothly especially in Command and Conquer Generals and LOTR.

....and my friends set it his computer to overclock.

is 9500 any good?
i would suggest something newer but for your price range maybe. check tomshardware.com, they do a lot of graphic card testing and will be able to tell you the best card for your money. but i do truly suggest you spend a little more money and get a better card.

well playing Counterstrike Source on high, it runs perfectly fine but it can't really run Crysis at all, which i knew it wouldn't. I was only looking at upgrading since the computer is already almost three years old. I may still look at overclocking if my roommate has the time some weekend because i would like to see how how the cpu and mobo can safely handle it.

:T_T: that's why... so buy the latest mobo and cpu. I thought its coming from your wallet :shy:
still is but i decided not to upgrade it at this time because i don't really do major gaming on it and it still runs just as fast as it did when i built it two years ago, plus my keyboard just broke so i needed a new one so i got the Logitech G110. It was between that and the Microsoft Sidewinder X6 and I read that the magnets that hold the number pad on the Microsoft keyboard can mess with your mouse and I have the Logitech MX Revolution mouse and I don't want to have to replace it since i got it from Circuit City before it closed

hmmm... wait until your computer going downgrade and try overclocking if you want Crysis.
[Well, expect that the life expectancy will lessen due to overclock]

for the meantime, save your money. ;)

i like optical mouse :D

yeah i'll probably just leave it alone and when SSD's become cheaper gain speed that way or give it to my dad because his desktop is a giant steaming pile of crap and build a new desktop computer when I have a job. I just wish DDR3 RAM wasn't so freaking expensive, its almost 100 bucks for 4 gigs of DDR3 1066 which is the lowest DDR3 available.

I will miss having a fingerprint reader but it doesn't work with Windows 7 anyways :p

I would just go ahead, and save up an get the CPU/MOBO/RAM. So then you don't have to worry about upgrading it for awhile, and also if your a gamer it would be the best thing to do if your not a gamer there is really no reason to do so. Also with overclocking your not going to see a big difference, and if you do overclock what if your going to overclock its a good chance it will go out faster, and you will have to buy new parts.
