Both of them look extremely bad. Horrifyingly bad. An abomination of art. If these really are real, which they are most likely not, then i'm gonna pass on this movie.

What sense does it make to completely destroy the visual coolness of these characters for a highly anticipated movie?

Conceptional design for animation tends to be done in manner such as these, especially for characters who undergo a massive amount of changes throughout the course of the film and/or movie. This is especially the cases for "character sheets"(we have a different term for it in Dutch).

They normally don't reflect the final product in terms of how they visually appear in the actual animation.

(My study involves animation, so have a bit of depth in these kind of things.)
