I have a rather large problem on my hands that I need opinions on.

For the better part of this year I've been extremely sick. Extreme weight loss, constant high fevers, my body was extremely weak etc. On top of this, I've battled depression (seriously, not a fabric of your imagination like a lot of people like to say they have it but don't) for the better part of two years. Mentally, I'm absolutely drained.

Now here's my dilemma. I'm in first year University, Bachelors of Science; Biology. I'm acing Biology and Calculus, but I bombed my first chemistry quiz and I'm not particularly confident in doing well on my next quiz next week. I have two exams this Friday and will have no time for studying for chemistry until the weekend. If I don't do well on this next quiz, I can literally kiss any dream of medical school goodbye (despite my 90+ average in everything else, Chemistry will bring me all the way down to sub-mid 70's by itself). My high school chemistry teachers were absolutely horrible and in no way prepared us for this level of chemistry. My mom suggested that I defer my offer (put it on hold) until next year starting next September, and get a tutor for chemistry going in, so I'm very prepared for Chemistry, without having to risk possible admission into med school. Another option would be to completely change my program. I was thinking of taking Kinesiology, which is completely devoid of Chemistry and is very Biology oriented which I love.

I'm basically having a mental breakdown at this point and I really need input on this. I'm afraid that getting overly stressed will weaken my body again and I will be more prone to getting sick once more.

Take the year off, relax, get a tutor, re-evaluate your position, after everything you have been through pushing yourself will hurt you in the long run. Your mother is right.

You must have both worked hard and be naturally brainy to get where you have, don't blow it through impatience, let yourself heal.

To be brutally honest, I've never had to work that hard to do well in school. I've constantly been told that I was naturally smart but I never let that get to my head lol.

But thank you for your opinion. It is greatly appreciated.

Get a tutor, and if you feel it's necessary change your program so you don't risk ruining your chances in the future, stay after class for extra help, ask the professor if he knows any free websites that can help or if he recommends any tutors.

I hope you're not stressing over that still......

"That" is completely gone man. Don't worry about that.

And staying after class is a no-go. University is magnitudes harder than High School and I'm nothing but a number. The only times we can ask the professors questions is during the tutorial classes, but I have 700 other people ask questions at the same time and I can barely get questions in, and the office hours (only 1 hour per session) have 20-30 people per time and I literally can't ask a question because people ask multiple questions.

That is something to be very proud of and even more of a reason to take care of yourself and not be impatient, it will all still be there in a year, relax, heal and prepare. And good luck to you, I wish you all the best ^^ I like to see people serious about education and there future.

Don't throw in the towel just yet, I know you're going through a mental struggle, but sometimes you just gotta embrace it as a challenge.

To me, it sounds like this chemistry quiz is draining the last of your endurance. Really, the chemistry quiz isn't so bad most likely, but only in the wake of your sickness and depression.

I suggest strategizing. In studying for this test, you want your emotional/mental stability to net neutral at least (not have a negative impact on your well being). This comes from confidence and willpower, which will net from better study strategies.

You know the format of the quiz, this is huge. Attack the format. All multiple choice? Train to see word and definition association. Essay? Focus on conceptual knowledge. Math problem (I'm guessing this judging that it's chemistry)? Do practice problems until your technical process skills are maximum, in other words, any sample problems of material on the quiz, you can easily do.

You can do this, even if your previous teacher was terrible, all that matters is you're here now. Use your available resources to maximize your chances on this test. Knowing the quiz format is the biggest advantage you have here as well.

Good luck. Do your best to focus some serious mental aggression on this quiz! I think it's your best shot!

You are a beautiful person. Thank you so much!

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

The problem here is that, I've been doing the practice sets and I've done the past quizzes. The quiz itself isn't that hard, but the content we need to do is the harder part.

It's out of 30 marks, 6-7 questions worth 4-5 marks each. We only get 50 minutes for the quiz, and if you don't show each and every step to how you got your answer, you get the entire question wrong even if you got the right answer. Even if you do most of the question right and accidentally misuse a number in a calculation which changes your final answer, you get no part marks at all. So not only are you hard pressed for time on questions that are all multi-step, there's added pressure to constantly check that your metric units are right and that your answer is as right as possible.

Yikes, no partial credit is difficult. Regardless, it is the situation at hand.

You got to put in as much time as it takes for you to be able to complete it as necessary. I suggest creating a process yourself. Take a sample problem of each type of problem yourself, and write down a step by step process (as many steps as you need in your own words and understanding) and follow this in practice until it all just clicks.

You have identified the key things you must study for this quiz though: The exact process is essential to do good and you have around 7 minutes per question in worst case scenario. I'd say your off to a good start of outlining what you need to know =D
