I've had the ACER TravelMate 5520 for a while now and I've ran into overheating issues where the damn thing would over heat to the point it'd shut off and not start up again.

I've fixed this by opening up the bottom and putting it ontop of a industrial fan.

Recently (just today,) it's shut down again and continues to shut down whilst loading. I'm not sure if it's a malicious virus or if its just over heating again.

It turns off so fast that I can't even run the F2 option to look at what the issue is. Though if I leave it sit it'll let me be on for a few minutes. Which makes me believe that it's overheating again, but would it even be able to with a huge fan under it...?

Like I said I have an industrial fan on it. Its constant room temp. I just cleaned it out with qtips and aersol, I tried it again and the same thing happened. This time it started up and I got an error.

APERANTLY you need a fan hooked into it.. D; Anyways Im reformatting so hopefully that fixes it.. xD;

two problems...1. never use aersol to clean a laptop, that can mess with the components. 2. reformatting will not solve a over heating problem. How old is the laptop?

Acer's always seem to overheat.

The main problem I ran into when I had one was that the fan which would cool the system also sucked up the dust of where ever I was using it, thus clogging the system and p***ing me off.

I would recommend asking someone who knows what they're doing to opening it up and clean out the dust, there's really no good way to clean the laptop without opening it up since the dust can get to where no Q-tip can go.

I didnt aerosol anything on the motherboard I used qtips for that. Ialso reformatted incase it was malware instead of overheating as recently it was shutting off before it could even start up windows.

Anyways the reformat went horrible as it says it didnt install windows properly. AND I don't have a windows disc to run from.. lmfao.

Any suggestions? xD;

going from a real pc to a netbook will not be an easy transfer netbooks lack computing power meaning they are slow.

the trade off is portability as you can basically put it in your pocket. but considering your old laptop i think you want something that will have some speed to it, and live more than an hour and a half without a bulky battery expansion pack.

i suggest an asus (not in any way an acer) its the top line pc that runs on windows. not dell,toshiba, or HP (gots dirt on all of em xD)

and acer is the kia of the pc world

my roommate has one and all he did was upgrade to two gigs of ram and its runs perfect. plus netbook are made for portability so they shouldn't have the power of a true laptop.

I agree with your suggestion but I've heard good things the Dells but they are hard to mod.

xD thats actually what I did, i replaced my almost 3 y/o dell with a custom built desktop, but i wanted a laptop for school which is what i use primarily.

dont get a netbook :| cause if they fell or got dmg from anything from the surrounding , then ull just have to get rid of it ( they cant be repaired )
well i once had the same problem u had and i discovered that my processor isnt getting enough cooling thats why the pc or laptop shuts down as soon as u turn it on ...
try replacing the cpu fans , it should work :)
formating wont work ...

I kinda have the same problem with my cousin's laptop.Did you installed Windows 7 or Vista recently?His laptop failed to startup.And at first the "symptom" sounds similar like yours,randomly switched off..
I figure the laptop has a HDD failure,and the only solution is to reinstall windows(I cant even get into safe mode)
