I understand why a lot of people like One Piece and I know why Naruto is not a very good manga
But IMO, One Piece is a bit overrated
In essence, it is like Fairytail but it does a better job of using "Nakama power" in subtle ways. Also, One Piece does not use dat much fanservice to move the plot but it does reuse storylines from past arcs
But what separates One Piece and Naruto does not come down to plot. It comes to down to great written characters
To me, One Piece does have good written characters but theres no character who stands out. In Naruto, it is different because there are some characters who are even bigger than the plot as well as Kishi.
Pretty much, almost every character got the same level of development in One Piece. No one character depends on another. They have their own personality and appearance. But theres not one character that screams masterpiece.
In Naruto, u have characters like Obito, Itachi, Oro who are excellent written characters and they stick out like a sore thumb. They are memorable.
IMO, theres a few memorable characters in One Piece like Ace and Whitebeard, but thats mostly due to the plot helping them. In others, the plot made these characters. In Naruto, some characters made the plot.
To be honest, there was one character back in the day who I thought was going to be memorable and it was this person.
Hands down, Usopp was the best written character. At that time, Water 7 arc was getting really good because the amount of development Usopp had and I was impressed. He was the MVP of dat entire arc hands down and nobody was close. He was great. He was the underdog. He was relatable. He was awesome. I expected great things from him.
But then Oda, took all dat development and shoved it down the toilet and made Usopp revert back to the ***** character.
That to me is the closest One Piece got to an excellent well written character.
