Itachi knew his limits. He would not go try to pick a fight with the two strongest shinobi at that time, pain and obito (who would have intervened as well to kill itachi).

OT- Yet, the "Sologod" did not know of Pain's plans. At the end, he succeeded in stopping a civil war, succeeded beating Kabuto, failed at saving Sasuke, failed in saving konoha from the Akatsuki.

No he did not. Pain was ordered by Obito to destroy the Leaf even while Itachi was alive, and he did just that. Furthermore, Itachi wouldn't have been able to beat either Pain/Nagato or Obito in a fight.
