I used to wonder why Madara said Hashirama was the only one who could beat him. I think they did tie as kids though, if you remember that rock that fell afterwards. But after that, Hashirama became better then Madara.

Madara clearly said if they fought they'd lose, so they retreated. I count that as a forfeit.

Rock is moot. It was a Taijutsu scuffle, which Hashirama won. Madara threw a rock at Hashi after Madara was already on the ground, and Hashirama had already claimed victory. It was more for comedic value.
