Garp viewed Ace just like his second grandson. He loved Ace as much as he loves Luffy. But somehow it seems to me that his sense of duty to marines are greater than his love for his grandsons. Ace was in the danger of being executed multiple times, and Garp was next to him, but he never tried to save him. He did show discomfort at the idea of Ace dying, but he wouldn't still try to save him. He even got in front of Luffy from saving Ace, even though his love for them was too much and he lost the fight on purpose. So why do you guys think Garp sees his loyalty to marines greater than his love for his grandsons?

The morals that Garp has had when it comes to pirates and marines is something that has existed long before Ace did.

say you are the chairman of the joint chiefs and your adopted son was sentenced to death due to the crimes he had committed, what would you do?

would you turn your back on your country, your men to attempt and rescue your son knowing you will ultimately fail?

I think his love of his grandsons is greater but I also think that he believes that his grandsons are men who make their own decisions and they need to be accountable for them, if they chose a life of a pirate, even if he disagrees, he will recognize them as pirates and even though he will not hunt them down he will also not help them no matter how much (emotional) pain it causes him

Garp is a proud man and a man of principle

Because he doesn't give a shit.

Garp's mindset before Ace's death: "Damn, these two kids' bounties just keep on rising"
Garp's mindset after Ace's death: Phew...one less pirate to worry about"

Garp is a piece of shit U_U Roger should've killed him.

That's why it was very sad...
He loved his boys so much yet he was nowhere near any kind of help for them...

Man, Garp's tears at Ace's wrong selection of path that lead him to it, pierce deep in my heart everytime...

This.

It's just so painful for me to watch when he tears up because you can tell he wants to help his grandsons but he can't because of his principles as well as his position. :(

U said it well. Garp always wanted Luffy and Ace to become marines. It's kind of ironic cause ultimately Garp is the one who is on the wrong side (or not the right one) -marines,wg- which will prove so in the future..

Luffy isn't on the ''right'' side yet either

until the SH's learn about the Void century and actively try to overthrow the corrupt WG they will simply be pirates

the only ones on the ''right'' side atm seem to be the revolutionaries

Garp is a marine, ace was a pirate. He couldn't be both a loyal marine and a grandpa to ace. The only reason he let luffy knock him out the way was because despite that, he couldn't bring himself to strike down the child he raised and loved. He would hvae killed akainu for aces sake if not for sengoku.

Because no matter who you are, or what you do, your actions have consequences. In the real world, if you slaughter people or commit a bunch of crimes, and your parents find out, they may have you taken in by authorities. It's the same in fiction. Ace was a criminal, he burned down entire towns and attacked other people. He wasn't some angel.

Like Ace would ever burn down towns that consist of outside people who have nothing to do with pirates and their business
