"Racism exists when prejudice+power combine to form social constructs, legislation and widespread media bias that contribute to the oppression of the rights and liberties of a group of people. Racism is systemic, institutional, and far reaching. It is the prevalence of racism within social structures and institutional norms, along with implicit and explicit enforcement by members of a group, that allows racism to run rampant and unchecked. America is a country seeped in white privilege, and our social structure is built on colonization and forced slave labor that then turned into further systemic and ongoing oppression of PoC. We have a culture that presents whiteness as the norm and all else as ‘other’ or different. White is presented as the beauty ideal, the main face in the media (unless we’re talking about criminals, then PoC get unfairly misrepresented), the standard, the regular. It’s a structural problem that affects the perceptions of jurors in criminal cases, admissions to colleges, funding for public schools, welfare and food stamp programs, the redrawing of district lines that affect where we vote, who we see represented on T.V. and how, what schools people have access to, what neighborhoods people live in, an individual’s shopping experience, access to goods and services; it’s extensive and a part of the fabric that let’s whiteness remain dominant in American culture."

I stole this from another thread and thought it looked interesting to discuss.

What do you think?

Well you can be racist to white people. But if a white teen gets shot by the cops the media doesn't care.

Big BS.

Racism is a form of disrespect/segregation/opression towards a citizen due to this citizen's race(skin color). Any disrespect towards a person simply because of his/her race is racism. Any trail of segregating a person from the rest of the population, like forbidding the person from entering some public establishment simply because of his/her skin color is racism.
Trying to take away a person's right, any of them, simply because of his/her race, is racism.

As you can see, by definition, all of the post you quoted is a big overreaction. Media's involvment, that's only circunstantial. It's a result from a big part of the population being racist towards a group. Institutional rules, law opression, all of that, those are consequences of racism in big proportions, not a cause.

Therefore, there is nothing in the definition of racism that allows such thing as "you can bever be racist to white people".

The writter of that text is just another dumb moralism trying to glorify the "opressed minorities" and claiming equality.

Tell me, OP. Desrespecting a black person because of his/her race is a racist crime, but disrespecting a white person is not. Does that sound like equality to you?

lmao calm down. I never said I agreed with it, but since you want to talk about equality, why is it that African Americans are looked at more poorly than Caucasians?

You can definitely be racist to white people and they do feel it.

You just have to be in a "minority community".

No, you can't.

Racism and prejudice are two distinct things. Racism is something embedded into the social, political, and economic systems of a society. How can you oppress the oppressors? Racism against Hispanics and African Americans is institutionalized. When you call a white person a "cracker" all you're doing is offending their ego. However, look at the racism against minorities. They're discriminated to the point where they're stripped of the of the opportunities a white person gets. The racism they encounter put them at an extreme disadvantage in multiple facets of their lives.

Bold- that, that right there. That's BS, fellows.

These moralists assume tha simply because black people were opressed in the past(by white people), they have the right to "opress back" without any issues. That is not a solution at all.

Even though, nowadays, racism towards black people still exist, that doesn't mean all white citizens are racist. Therefore, those who follow their duties as innocent citizens have the right to be respected. Thus, these citizens can't suffer from any kind of disrespect. If a black person wants do disrespect those citizens simply because they are white(and then called opressors), he/she can't, because they aren't actually opressors.

Being a part of the group that in the past were opressors doensn't instantly define you as an opressors. Your actions define you as such.

Any disrespect towarda a white person simply because of the fact they are white is still racism.

What do you mean by "looked more poorly"? You're talking about the fact that a higher % of poor people is black?

Because if that's what you're talking about, then you must look to history. It's also a fact that blackpeople suffered from intense opression in the past. The situation did change, as they now have their basic rights that every citizen has guaranteed by law. Therefore, they're citizens, just like anyone else.

However, you can't pretend the past didn't happen. As they were harmed in the past, there are sequels of the past that still live on. Poberty is one of them. It takes time for the entire black population to reestablish and build good lives. That doesn't happen overnight.
But now, they have that oportunity, as they have their rights, as they are now citizens. Of course, there's still racism towards them, but that is against the law, and the racist person will suffer the consequences.

It's a fact that there are many extremely successful black people. There are many successful black people arround. Upper class, upper middle class, middle class.

You cant notice that the situation changed a lot, and they are reaching similar proportions of white people. 20 years from now, maybe, the % in all classes might be very similar.

The right thing to do was already done. They're citizens, as I said twice. Now, time will do the changes, as we can see. What you CAN'T do is tryi to give them privileges because of what happened in the past, and call it equality. That's compensation, revenge. And it leads to more hatred between the groups.
