I think that most of the reasons why... ahem... *some* of you believe in "Tobidara"... are actually valid reasons to prove that Kishi retconned Tobi's identity (i.e., he changed his mind halfway through the story). Especially the thing about Kurama recognizing Tobi's chakra 16 years ago. That always bothered me.
Many things in this series have been retconned. I'm not complaining, though, it's natural in a long manga like this, especially when you have higher-ups telling you to change this and that, add this, focus more on this character... mangakas don't have complete freedom.
Other things that were possibly retconned:
- Itachi being evil
-Multiple tailed beasts, and the concept of Jinchuurikis (the word was never used in part 1, and Gaara's Shukaku was never referred to as the One-Tail)
- Hiruzen being the God of Shinobi, i.e. the strongest of all Hokages
- Kabuto's past
- White Zetsu being weak Hashirama clones
That's just off the top of my head. Of course, some of you will say "no, those were just plot twists", and of course I can't definitevely prove you wrong. But they're inconsistencies just like the Obito reveal inconsistency. Tobi being Obito is the greatest of all retcons imo.
I remember when people were theorizing that Tobi was Sasuke's father, having used Izanagi (and thus having only one Sharingan) lol... In the end it's all up to Kishi. If he retcons things it's because it's what he thinks is best for the story. Of course you're gonna change your mind about certain things in a 14+ year span... I have written stories in a week that I felt needed changing. Imagine 14 years.
On that note, did anyone here read the Naruto pilot? Lol 'cause it should make you believe that Kishi had little to no idea where this was going:
