Jiraiya and Pain

Lets go back to the time when Jiraiya fought Pain in both Anime and Manga. Did you guys really expect Jiraiya to actually beat Pain in a fight back then? Feel free to answer for both Manga and Anime only. (Pretty much what you prefer to watch Naruto in) I would appreciate you answers.

I Watched the Anime fight (Started Reading Manga after Danzo's death) and the moment that the Animal Pain started the fight i pretty much knew that the fight was lost this though evolved further when he summoned the two other paths, which didn't look like the pain that i saw a few episodes back (Deva)

OT: I expected him to escape after he killed 3 of the paths.

Try to keep this before all of the info, ignore the pain arc focus solely on Jiraiya fighting pain.

TBH I expected the Sannin to win or escape and warn the village about akatsuki but Kishi had other ideas. He decided to announce who Pain really was and then he showed us the 6 paths of Pain and then you realise that they are all different paths of a guy that wasn't even part of the 6 paths; that was where I began to sense Jiraiya might lose but not to die because I thought he was going to train Naruto to become even stronger back then

His talk with Tsunade made me think something bad was going to happen, but just for a moment (after he survived Asura's surprise attack and 'killed' the Animal Path), yeah, i thought he was going to survive (not win).
That made his death even more sad T-T

When I first saw that they were gonna fight I thought that since jaraiya was fighting the leader of akatsuki that he was gonna take a real beating though I thought that he was gonna win. But when he took on all 3 pains(which I thought were the max number), I was getting a little worried . But when he introduced sage mode I was dead set that he was gonna win. But when all 6 cqme out I was like "DAFUK!?" And once jaraiya dropped to his knees and proclaimed that he couldn't move anymore, I knew he was gonna die
