Both are great.
Harry potter could have been so much better though.
as could LOTR.

Overall I like Harry Potter, mostly coz of Snape and Dumbeldore :p

Emma watson > Any female character in LOTR js...

Blasphemy. LOTR could not have been any better. If you have doubts, go watch the Hobbit movies and LOTR will seem even better. LOTR all day long.

Trying to read the Lord of the Rings books was basically impossible. I only got to page like 130 but loved the movies. However, I love Harry Potter more than any other literature in history

The first book is dreadfully boring. The literature is broken into 6 books, each one basically equates to half a film. You have to get through book 1 and you will be home free. Book 2 is really good but book one is, again, dreadfully boring.

Book one picks up once they reach Bree ;)

But the best chapter is in book 2 :)

yes, LoTR was written as one book but was split into 3 upon printing because of paper shortage after the second world war

the 50th anniversary edition has all 6 books (if you get separate trilogy you get 2 ''books'' in one trilogy book) of the lord of the rings, though you don't have any of Tolkien's other works

So I have everything that was in the movie Trilogy? What other pieces of his work do I need to read all of his works about Middle Earth so I can understand it all

After the trilogy you could read the Silmarillion and unfinished tales, but you should only read them if you're seriously in love with LOTR at that point. I read the Silmarillion when I was completely obsessed with LOTR, and I'm glad I did, but looking back I realise I only managed because I was so obsessed.

Like both but definitely LOTR. Respects to both authors but Jackson > Yates, Columbus, Newall, & Cuaron neg diff.

I think HP was amazing, Snape's story in particular was touching in so many ways. There wasn't a character like Snape in LOTR, and he's one of the best written characters ever. In my opinion.

Having said that, the series in all it's stories was never as mystifying as LOTR. It's world was great, but Middle Earth is incomparable.

HP I look for things to tout, LOTR speaks for itself. I'll take LOTR anyday, and I still love HP.

Oh, LOTR movies neg diff HP movies. Only one close in quality are the first and last HP movies, which still fall quite short.

This. The theatrical version of Return of the king also has about 100 pages of appendices that cover different stories, but again that might be the one special version.

As someone else stated, pick up the story after they get to Bree. In the movie they get to Bree very fast but in the book there is a ton of additional, yet boring, story on there way there.

You have (more or less) everything that was in the movies, but if you want to get the entire Tolkien's universe you have to read The Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales,mThe Hobbit, ... Google it

I would also suggest The Children of Húrin.

Though I am also an HP fan, I never get tired of watching LOTR, even the cast interviews. The ending of the LOTR trilogy made a bigger impact to me than how HP ended.

LMAO! so just because Harry Potter has more parts you are choosing Harry?? So nothing about character, story, visuals, development? Purely on the number of parts?
