Madara wasn't able to protect no one. He couldn't even come to a compromise given the fact that Hashirama/Tobirama repeatedly won their battles.

Itachi was smarter and protected his brother from dying as long as he was alive, even tough he manipulated sasuke and hurt him, he would never kill him. while Madara chose to fight everyone and to be honest, he was the leader of his clan. Hashirama gave him multiple chances, but he never accepted them.
Izuna died because of madara's selfish desire to kill Senju.

Madara could've prevented Izuna's death by making peace with Senju, but he chose to fight, and he payed the price.
Whereas Itachi prevented the war and his brother's death, which was inevitable because he was an Uchiha and would get killed.

In the manga it was shown that Madara was about to accept Hashirama's offer but it was IZUNA who stopped him and said that Madara must never trust the Senju and that they are just trying to trick the Uchiha. Madara followed his brother's will throughout because he respected his opinion and didn't want to betray him. Itachi on the other hand did NOTHING for his brother, everything he did was for his own sake, not his brother. That's why he even tried to turn his own brother into a konoha puppet with Koto Amatsu Kami, lied to him throughout his life and tortured him, after killing his parents even. Itachi is the worst brother ever! Even before the whole massacre thing Itachi was still not a good brother, he never spent any time with Sasuke and even neglected Sasuke's training, everytime Sasuke asked for help Itachi was 'too busy' to even give five minutes of guidance. I'm not saying Itachi didn't love Sasuke, but loving him and being a good brother are two quite significantly seperate issues in this case, Itachi wasn't even remotely a good brother.
