I'd recommend Castle.

But for anime, try No Game No Life.

How about Monster or Code geass.
Oh and by the way congratulations on the baby, is it a boy or a girl?

Wolf's Rain is a little dark, but it's extremely good as far as your other points are concerned. Few others I'd recommend:

- Samurai Champloo
- Cowboy Bebop
- Baccano!
- Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

I was thinking of recomending the Champloo as well. Such a great, fun anime! Can be dark sometimes tho....but then again almost EVERY anime has something depressing in it. Guess it's part of Japanese culture that in order for a hero to become strong they have to experience some horrific traumatizing event- like how Itachi killed his parents in front of Sasuke- that is pretty brutal. Happened so long ago that everybody is kinda *meh* about it now, lol

If you want one with just the right amount of depressing but not too dark, try Trigun. Been a really long time since I watched it but its funny yet serious but most importantly, good =D

If you wanna get so depressed you might cry- watch the Evangellion series. Put all sharp objects away and lock up all your firearms first tho, lol

Saw that someone mentioned Akame go kiru....anime of it just started. Its not dark at all...its bright....bright red....with blood

people die left and right!

Anything directed towards children over 8 should have at least SOME level of darkness if you ask me. Everything else just doesn't appeal otherwise, and I can't see how it would.

Yeah, it is a great show (second-funniest I've ever seen after Clannad), as is to be expected from the great Watanabe:)

Ah man, I forgot all about Trigun! Bro, I second this, too.
