I don't agree with you. Sasuke had all the intention of killing Naruto. But after the fight, he decided to not to follow what his brother said and decided to walk his own path and find a way to awaken Mangekyou Sharingan.

While i agree with you on the fact that sasuke didnt want to ge tmangekyou the same way as itachi, sasuke actually did held back during the fight because, 1: the first time he chidori'd naruto right to the chest, it healed back. 2: sasuke at that point was confused and was focused on his own path, which didnt involved killing naruto, before he got to the valley, he would've killed sakura if that was the case. But due to the fact that he had ties with sakura, he knocked her out so she wouldn't interfere any longer. Same as naruto, i spent years thinking...why would he do it? but simply there was no need for him to kill naruto at that point, and naruto was his only relation when it comes to friendhsip and brotherhood.

WHen we got to shippuden, he had gotten what he wanted, (almost) and at that point he had no ties with naruto or sakura at that point, so that's when he fully developed killing intents towards naruto and rest of team 7.

It does, this actually impacts sasuke's actions right now. Sasuke has developed in such a big way, same as naruto. While his actions are neither good or bad..(antihero), his judgements are just neutral, he does what he wants. Him switching to fist at the valley was a strength test against naruto.

Every time in the manga you see a panel where sasuke says "Naruto..just how far have you...", thats because he fully acknowledged naruto as a rival, naruto is his motivation to keep getting stronger vice-versa, and after hagoromo gave them both powers. They realised they are technically brothers in arms and their feud is pointless.

Im not a fan of sasuke, but i rewatched the first fight between naruto and sasuke.
And i realised, sasuke actually held back his chidori and switched from pierce to fist against naruto's chest.
He knew that naruto didnt want to kill him (Hence the fact that naruto scratched his headband instead), so he switched to fist to hit naruto instead of piercing his heart.

You got it backward Naruto pull back His Rasengan at the last minuet and scratch Sasuke Headband because He wanted to bring Sasuke back alive in one peace for Sakura. Had Naruto not pull back Sasuke would have died.

My opinion is that he wanted to defeat Naruto because he had become an obstacle to obtaining power. That's it.

He didn't need to kill him to defeat him. And whether it was a whim to let him live, as Sasuke later said it was, I doubt that.

Sasuke added a tomoe to his sharingan during this fight, not coincidentally immediately after he tells Naruto he has to cut their bond.
I've always believed that happened because there was a strong bond to begin with.

What does that fight have to do with the current story. And also sasuke told naruto in that fight that he wouldn't be able to lay a finger on his fourhead witch naruto did in the end also in my own opinion they were equal.
